ESIP UPDATE: 11.06.17

Good morning ESIP!
And good November… a month when we move on from pumpkin spice to cranberry sauce.
Lots of us will be in New Orleans for the AGU meeting, missing our annual sourdough fix, but enjoying the gumbo ya-ya and, of course, the Ignite lightning talks Wednesday evening! We are still looking for a couple speakers. It is a lot of fun! Believe me. Sign up below!
And while you're signing up for things, get your Winter Meeting registration in early too!

Best,
Bruce and the ESIP staff

P.S. Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.  If you are on Slack, are you using the Slack App? It's a much better GUI. Grab it HERE

ESIP 2018 Winter Meeting Registration is Open
Registration is OPEN for the 2018 ESIP Winter Meeting, January 9th – 11th in Bethesda, MD! Our theme for 2018 is Data for our Changing Earth: Realizing the socioeconomic value of Earth science data.

Survey of ESIP Partner Education Programs & Projects
ESIP Education has a 3 question survey we would like you to complete so that we can collect the high-level web pages of the education programs & projects of ESIP partners, members, and those who participate in ESIP activities.
The goal  of this survey is to provide better visibility of education and outreach activities that our ESIP community offers.  Based on the information provided in the survey, ESIP will post a list of these education programs / projects. Thank you in advance for your time! https://goo.gl/forms/ehKboY8k6GTb8aEK2

ESIP Member Recognition Nominations
Peer recognition webpage.
The ESIP Partner of the Year
This award is to honor an ESIP member organization that best exemplifies the spirit of ESIP in one or more areas, through the sharing of a success story.

Please send nominations for these high honors to nominations@esipfed.org today!

ESIP and the Center for Open Science are helping build the EarthArXiv Preprint Service
Already more than one hundred objects have been uploaded to EarthArXiv.org in less than 2 weeks! Each upload gets its own OSF project to upload data, software and other related outputs!
Here are some SLIDES that you can use to explain how preprints work to your colleagues.

 2018 ESIP Geosemantics Symposium
The ESIP Semantic Technology Committee is please to invite you to the 2018 Geosemantics Symposium, to be held in conjunction with the 2018 ESIP Winter Meeting. The Geosemantics Symposium will be held on January 8, 2018 from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Bethesda Maryland. The theme for this year's Symposium is “Practical Applications of Ontologies and Semantic Technologies”. The morning session will feature presentations on real life applications that leverage semantics to make data and information FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). The afternoon session will feature hands-on workshops and tutorials on how to implement and use semantic tools and techniques, and how to work with ontologies to achieve FAIR objectives. The agenda is still under development, but you can track it as it develops here.

AGU Help Desk

Now that AGU abstracts have been assigned to sessions (thanks, Lesley Wyborn & Program Committee!), it's time to think about the AGU Data Fair!
New this year and inspired by Ruth Duerr, ESSI President, we are adding a Data Help Desk to the Data Fair activities. The Data Help Desk will have three sections 1) Data Reference Desk  (where volunteers can answer data questions) 2) Data Management Workshops (where volunteers will give data-centric workshops) and 3) Tool and Platform Demos (where volunteers can provide a tool/service demonstration).
We are looking for volunteers to sign-up for each of the Help Desk sections for hour long shifts. Sign-up is here: https://goo.gl/forms/Yao672NXobgITyax2

Ignite! at AGU
We are still looking for a couple presenters! It's your turn to tell the world about your work… in 5 easy minutes!
NASA’s Applied Sciences Program – in partnership with AGU’s Earth and Space Science Informatics (ESSI) group and the ESIP Federation – is thrilled to co-sponsor IgniteAGU 2017 at the upcoming Fall AGU meeting. Ignite (
www.igniteshow.com), a concept created by O’Reilly Media, provides presenters a strict presentation format – five minutes and 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds – to make their point. Enlighten us, but make it quick!

OGC seeks public comment on TimeseriesML 1.2 Candidate Standard
The TimeseriesML 1.2 Candidate Standard is available for public review and comment at portal.opengeospatial.org/files/76112.
Through the use of existing OGC standards, TimeseriesML 1.2 aims at being an interoperable exchange format that may be re-used to address a range of time series data exchange requirements and scenarios.
Example areas of usage are: cross-border exchange of observational data; release of data for public dissemination; enhancing disaster management through data exchange; and exchange in support of national reporting.
