ESIP UPDATE: 01.01.18

Happy New Year ESIP!
We hope your holidays were spectacular and restful. Now it's time to look ahead. The ESIP Winter 2018 meeting is coming together with an amazing variety of plenaries and breakouts… you can dive deep into
cloud computing and cognitive computing, and a range of other great topics!

In 2017, ESIP consolidated itself into a new member-led non-profit organization. It also achieved a new level of awareness that it's purpose as an organization is to facilitate and accelerate the means of sharing and growing the knowledge needed to pull valuable information from the data being collected about the Earth system. ESIP meetings assemble thousands of years of data use knowledge in a room where any problem or issue within Earth science data use can find solutions the entire community can use. ESIP Clusters turn these solutions into operational answers.

In 2018, ESIP celebrates twenty years of “Making Data Matter”! In this year, we hope to grow our grasp of the “ESIP way” so that we can become better at spinning up (and spinning down) clusters and continue to challenge ourselves to run the best Earth science data meetings on the planet.

Best,
Bruce and the ESIP staff

P.S. Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.  If you are on Slack, are you using the Slack App? It's a much better GUI. Grab it HERE

ESIP 2018 Winter Meeting Registration is Open
Registration is OPEN for the 2018 ESIP Winter Meeting, January 9th – 11th in Bethesda, MD! Our theme for 2018 is Data for our Changing Earth: Realizing the socioeconomic value of Earth science data.

 2018 ESIP Geosemantics Symposium
The ESIP Semantic Technology Committee is please to invite you to the 2018 Geosemantics Symposium, to be held in conjunction with the 2018 ESIP Winter Meeting. The Geosemantics Symposium will be held on January 8, 2018 from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Bethesda Maryland. The theme for this year's Symposium is “Practical Applications of Ontologies and Semantic Technologies”. The morning session will feature presentations on real life applications that leverage semantics to make data and information FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). The afternoon session will feature hands-on workshops and tutorials on how to implement and use semantic tools and techniques, and how to work with ontologies to achieve FAIR objectives. The agenda is still under development, but you can track it as it develops here.

Call for White Papers: Best Practices for a Future Open Code Policy for NASA Space Science
NASA has requested the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to investigate and recommend best practices as the Science Mission Directorate considers whether to establish an open code policy, complementary to its current open data policy. The committee appointed by the Academies to carry out this study is now soliciting community input in the form of white papers. Full details of the committee’s membership and schedule of activities, as well as the statement of task for this study and detailed instruction for drafting and submitting a white paper, are available on the study webpage

The specific goal of this call for white papers is to hear broadly from the community on any issues, situations, or points of view relevant to the topic, to ensure consideration of the full set of possible consequences of any new NASA open source policy. For the purpose of this call, “open code” and “open source” refer to computer program source codes released publicly under an open source license, as defined by the Open Source Initiative

To be considered at the committee’s next meeting, white paper submissions are due no later than January 12, 2018. The committee strongly encourages authors to submit white papers by this deadline, but papers will continue to be received until midnight on January 31, 2018.

Questions about the project or white paper submissions may be directed to the project staff at: asheffer@nas.edu.

NCEAS Data Science Fellowship – Round 2
Please visit our site here (https://www.nceas.ucsb.edu/content/data-science-fellowship-opportunities) to learn more about the Data Science Fellowship program at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), in Santa Barbara, California. Fellowships are paid 6-month appointments. Our next session starts in early July 2018. Data Science Fellows will be in residence at NCEAS and will work closely with data and informatics teams to solve data management, curation, analysis, and software issues relating to the NSF Arctic Data Center (ADC) and the State of Alaska's Salmon and People (SASAP) projects. Applications are due February 1, 2018 for full consideration and by March 1, 2018 at the latest. This is an exciting opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of data and data skills while working with a group of peers passionate about environmental and data science.

NOTE: Job Opportunities are now listed on the ESIP Job-Opportunities Slack Channel <https://esip-all.slack.com/messages/C4MMH7R8Q/>.  You can post and find jobs there. If you are not yet on the ESIP Slack team, use the invite (above) to join.
