ESIP UPDATE: 01.04.21

Good Morning ESIP,

Welcome to 2021 (finally)! While we don't know all that 2021 will bring, there is a lot to look forward to in ESIP. As a community that thrives because of the contributions of many individuals and organizations, we are excited to see what you will do in 2021 and we are always happy to hear how we can help you achieve your data-related goals. In this new year, we hope you'll join us in welcoming new individuals into the various parts of our community. Whether you meet new ones on a collaboration area call, on the ESIP Slack, or at the ESIP Meetings, in line with our Community Participation Guidelines, we hope you will strive to be inclusive, understand different perspectives, and appreciate and accommodate our similarities and differences. We appreciate that many of you frequently lead by example in these areas!

The ESIP Winter Meeting starts just 3 weeks from tomorrow! We hope you are able to join us for as much of the event as you can. To support the most innovative and productive breakout sessions we can, session organizers have been invited to participate in trainings led by master facilitators this week. Many Collaboration Areas will also meet in their regular telecon slots to finalize session plans – you are more than welcome to join via the ESIP Telecon Calendar!

Have a wonderful week,
Megan

For over 20 years, ESIP meetings have brought together the most innovative thinkers and leaders around Earth observation data, thus forming a community dedicated to making Earth observations more discoverable, accessible and useful to researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and the public. Learn more about the meeting, which will feature 4 plenary sessions, 30+ community-contributed breakout sessions, the Research Showcase (virtual poster & demo session), and other networking opportunities here.

ESIP Lab Request for Proposals (due 1/29)

The ESIP Lab supports the Earth science community in building innovative, applied technologies through funding and community input. Additionally, projects are encouraged to have a learning objective as part of their deliverables. Through this Request for Proposals (RFP), the ESIP Lab seeks projects that last 6 – 8 months, with a maximum budget of $10,000. Learn more about esipfed.org/rfp.

ESIP Welcomes 2021 ESIP Community Fellows
The call for 2021 ESIP Community Fellows attracted a number of very impressive applicants. Ultimately, we select 8 Fellows. Like past Fellows, the 2021 Fellows provide support for and participate in various ESIP collaboration areas. Learn more about them HERE and make sure to say hello to them at the 2021 ESIP Meetings!

EarthCube seeking community input for new FAIR data training materials
Building on the EarthCube (EC) Leadership Council to promote the FAIR Data and Resources for the Geoscience Community, an initiative has been started to develop tutorials and informational briefings to increase awareness and facilitate activities to improve the FAIRness of EarthCube-related data, tools, and services. The FAIR Principles offer guidelines for improving the value of research data by making it more “Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.” The EarthCube Office seeks your help to identify priorities for creating new resources to support implementation of the FAIR data principles. We invite you to contribute through this *very* short survey: Topics for FAIR Data Training Resources. Please feel free to contact Melissa Cragin mcragin@sdsc.edu and/or Nancy Hoebelheinrich nhoebel@kmotifs.com if you have any questions or would be interested to have a conversation about this effort or the FAIR Principles.
