ESIP UPDATE: June 12, 2017

Happy Monday ESIPers –
This week Erin and I will be in Asheville, NC for the The Climate Resilient Grid: A Forum on Energy, Climate, and The Grid. The forum will explore how climate science and environmental data can inform challenges related to integrating renewables into the nation’s energy grid. If you're interested, follow #EnergyForum on social media to join the conversation.

In honor of the newly elected class of NASA astronauts, here is astronaut photograph ISS050-E-29426 acquired on January 1, 2017, provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. Photo shared from the NASA Earth Observatory website. May the new class continue to share images like this with the Earth-bound!

Lots going on in and around ESIP this week! Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.

Best,
Annie and the ESIP staff

Research as Art Call: Submission Deadline July 2nd
The Call for Entries is open. You can submit your artwork HERE. Once again at this year’s ESIP Summer Meeting we'll hold a Research as Art event (on the evening of Wednesday, July 26). Our goal is to encourage the ESIP community to use visual media to communicate their data and research; and to think about their research as an ongoing narrative that can be told through visual media. This event is about showing how the ESIP community uses data. You don’t need to consider yourself an artist in order to submit a piece. The idea is to have a range of entries that show the diversity of research done by members of our community, as well as their creativity and the impact of their work, in an engaging and accessible way.

Registration for the ESIP 2017 Summer Meeting is OPEN
Early registration (through June 30, 2017) is $415 for members and $550 for non-members. After June 30, the registration fee rises to $515 for members and $650 for non-members. The student registration fee is $150 (This does not go up). A special one-day rate is available for $200. A full refund will be given until June 30. No refunds will be issued for canceled registration after June 30. Register here.

Register for the Science Communication Workshop at the Summer Meeting
Kasey White, of the Geological Society of America, will lead a workshop titled “Be interesting and be heard: Communicating your science to policy makers.” To be most effective, participation will be limited to 20 individuals. Please sign up here.

Join the PROV Challenge! Don't just think it: share it!
Your idea might change the data world! Do you have a problem with PROV? An idea to make it work better for your data? A notion just on the tip of your hippocampus? Don't just think it: share it! The Community PROV Challenge seeks to explore how community-based provenance and annotation capabilities enhance scientific integrity throughout the data lifecycle. To do this, the USGS has partnered with the ESIP Lab to find creative solutions to PROV challenges.

Geoinformatics-related sessions at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting
Abstract submissions are open for the GSA Annual Meeting in Seattle, Oct 22-25, 2017, and there is a long list of Geoinformatics-related sessions for your consideration! Abstracts can be submitted from now until August 1, 11:59pm P.D.T.

——- We'd like to mention two sessions in particular ——-

T143. Curating Physical Samples in a Digital World
Leslie Hsu, Megan Carter, Anders J. Noren, Lesley A.I. Wyborn

Physical samples, such as cores, fossils, and water, have unique challenges for data stewardship because they are difficult, if not impossible, to fully digitize. We will explore challenges and solutions for digitally curating physical samples.

Invited speakers:

  • Lindsay Powers, USGS
  • Kerstin Lehnert, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University
  • Jens Klump, CSIRO

T147. What Can You Do with Geoinformatics?
Denise J. Hills, Chris Badurek, Christopher Keane, Shelley Stall

Many geoscientists are unfamiliar with geoinformatics, which integrates different disciplines and technologies to enable transformation of data into knowledge for geoscience. Careers in and applications of geoinformatics will be highlighted.

See full list of Geoinformatics-related sessions at this postIf you are a GSA member, consider joining the Geoinformatics Division the next time you renew your membership!

NEW data set released by the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center
A new data set has been released by the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) operated by CIESINU.S. Census Grids Summary File 1, v1 (2010 – 2010) has demographic/socioeconomic data for 2010, in ASCII+GeoTIFF formats.

AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships
Applications are now being accepted for the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF). STPF is the premier opportunity for outstanding scientists and engineers to learn first-hand about policymaking while contributing their knowledge and analytical skills to address today’s most pressing challenges. Fellows serve yearlong assignments in all three branches of the federal government in Washington, D.C. and represent a broad range of backgrounds, disciplines and career stages.

The application deadline for the 2018-19 fellowship year is November 1, 2017.
For more information and to apply, visit the website.

DataApp Challenge: A Mobile App Framework for Field Data Capture
Award: $30,000 USD
Deadline: July 6, 2017
Challenge hosts: Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Geological Survey

Note: We are looking for both submissions and judges*!

Data collection and capture are fundamental to water and environmental science and management. Scientists, engineers, and technicians are increasingly using mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones to capture data in the field. Numerous apps are available to support general data collection, however existing apps do not provide the functionality and flexibility needed to support the broad range of water and environmental monitoring needs. More importantly, these existing apps do not support the development and sharing of new features and functions by individual users and communities of practice.
