ESIP UPDATE: 02.05.18

Good morning all –

I'm pleased to announce the 2018 Raskin Scholarship for students or early-career scientists. In March 2012, the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) lost long-time member, Rob Raskin. Rob was soft-spoken, easy-going, wise and an Earth science information partner extraordinaire. Rob was a mentor to many aspiring Earth science data professionals. For more details on eligibility and how to apply, please visit our website

I hope everyone has a fantastic week!

AB and the ESIP staff

P.S. Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.

P.P.S. Show your ESIP Flip and Tumble Bag out and about – add photos HERE.  On Twitter use the hashtag:#myesipbag… we'll pick the best shots for shout-outs on future Monday updates and put them on the map!

RDA Drone Group Telecon Series
Addressing common challenges, opportunities, & technologies in making geotagged research data FAIR:

First telecon: Avenues and progress towards making sUAS data FAIR & How OceanIds is working to fully automate the data archival, processing and dissemination process from EU Underwater Gliders.

UCGIS Symposium
UCGIS is pleased to announce that its 2018 Symposium will be co-hosted with the Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS)! This joint AutoCarto and Symposium will explore Frontiers of Geospatial Data Science. We will consider connections between Geospatial Science and the burgeoning field of Data Science, seen in newly named academic departments and calls for funded research. At this event we will explore emerging opportunities and challenges for the geospatial and mapping sciences with an eye on trends in deep learning, data-intensive computing platforms, and visualization, as well as geospatial big data sources and applications such as location-aware social media, autonomous vehicles, and earth-observing micro- and nano-satellites and sensors.

SciDataCon 2018 will take place as part of International Data Week (IDW), 5–8 November 2018 [NEW DATE], in Gaborone, Botswana. Session proposals should be made at: http://www.scidatacon.org/IDW2018/.

Gridded Population of the World (GPWv.4.10)
The first ever global data set on the spatial distribution of population broken down by age group and male versus female is now available. The most recent update to the fourth version of the Gridded Population of the World (GPWv.4.10) data collection contains a unique data set on basic demographic characteristics related to age structure and sex ratios for the world, based on the 2010 round of national censuses. The data were developed by the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) operated by CIESIN.

The free, downloadable data and descriptions, including documentation and maps, are available at: http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/collection/gpw-v4/whatsnewrev10

NOTE: Job Opportunities (including internships) are now listed on the ESIP Job-Opportunities Slack Channel <https://esip-all.slack.com/messages/C4MMH7R8Q/>.  You can post and find jobs there. If you are not yet on the ESIP Slack team, use the invite (above) to join.
