ESIP UPDATE: 04.26.21
ESIP,
Happy belated Earth Day! I hope you all had a chance to pause and reflect last week on Earth Day about the importance of our work and the beauty of our world. While I realize it isn’t Spring everywhere, here in Maryland, the dogwoods and azaleas are in full bloom and nature is on full display. There is something about Spring that gives me hope. This update contains so many things that give me hope.
I am happy to report I am fully vaccinated and had my first in-person meeting with a member of the ESIP Community! Dave Jones lives just a few miles from me in Maryland and we met up for an outdoor meeting over coffee last week. It was really great to talk face-to-face and not via a screen. I really look forward to more of these conversations with all of you in the weeks and months ahead. If you are in the DC area and would like to meet up – let me know.
Earlier this month, your ESIP board met and had a really productive meeting. We are pleased to welcome Sarah Ramdeen to the ESIP Board as our Nominations Committee Chair. If serving on the Nominations Committee is something of interest to you please reach out to Sarah, myself or Ken Casey. The board approved a budget reallocation moving travel and in-person meeting funds to be put towards strengthening other areas of ESIP including increased funding for ESIP Lab and collaboration area projects, strengthened collaboration tools and communication. Additionally, this move will allow us to fund training to support the implementation of our Community Participation Guidelines, implicit bias and bystander training all with the aim of ensuring ESIP is a welcoming, inclusive and diverse community.
I want to congratulate Megan and all our volunteers for another very successful Data Help Desk at EGU last week. We had over 600 people interact with us in some way on Twitter and expect more as the EGU Meeting continues into its second week. This is a very visible and tangible way for ESIP to help support data management best practices and expand our reach! Building upon this work with our European colleagues, I encourage you to join us this Wednesday at from 11:30 am – 1 pm ET for our next installment in our Innovation Webinar series sponsored by SAIC. This month we are excited to feature Investing in Industrial Innovation (InCubed), a co-funding program of the European Space Agency’s Φ-Lab. The webinar will feature an overview of the Φ-Lab and InCubed, as well as 4 speakers from companies whose developments are or were supported by the InCubed Program. Learn more and register here.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you who have submitted great content proposals for the ESIP Summer Meeting. We are now working through the challenging puzzle that is scheduling and working to fit in all the great content while minimizing scheduling conflicts. It is a good problem when participants want to be in multiple sessions at the same time, but we work hard to get the schedule just right to maximize your participation and engagement. If you haven’t registered please do so here.
Have a great week and see you Wednesday at the webinar!

Next ESIP Innovation Webinar: European Space Agency Φ-Lab and the InCubed Programme (4/28 at 11:30 am ET/8:30 am PT)
The next installment in ESIP's webinar series on innovation will feature InCubed, which stands for ‘Investing in Industrial Innovation’ and is a Public Private Partnership co-funding program run by the European Space Agency (ESA) Φ-lab. InCubed focuses on developing innovative and commercially viable products and services that leverage the value of Earth observation imagery and datasets. The programme has a very wide scope and can be used to co-fund anything from building satellites to ground applications and everything between or to develop new EO business models. Learn more and register for this webinar at this link. Here is the detailed agenda:
Overview of the Φ-lab Division at European Space Agency & the InCubed Programme
Amanda Regan, Head of the Φ-lab Invest Office & InCubed Programme Manager, Earth Observation Future Systems Department ESA
Hyperscout-2: Miniaturised hyperspectral and thermal imaging coupled with Artificial Intelligence for breakthrough operational space missions. Speaker: Marco Esposito, Managing Director at cosine Remote Sensing
COASTEO: Providing validated water quality information to commercial clients using a combination of low cost buoy platforms and satellite data. Speaker: Charlotte O'Kelly, CEO at TechWorks Marine
MANTIS: A demonstration mission to jointly develop, build, launch and operate an innovative nanosatellite platform that will fly a high resolution Earth Observation (EO) camera aimed at oil and gas exploration. Speaker: Florian Deconinck, Vice President of Institutional Partnerships and Future Missions at Open Cosmos
SAT4FLOOD: A global levee risk monitoring service combining satellite high-resolution soil moisture data with InSAR deformation data and other EO data sources. Speaker: Patrick Stoppelman, Director Business Development at SkyGeo
Knowledge Graphs for Environmental Risk Management: Technical Overview of Neo4j Technologies for Semantics / AI / ML (Webinar recording now available)
If you missed the webinar on Neo4j hosted by the ESIP Ag & Climate Cluster, you can now view the recording on YouTube. This presentation covered the following: 1) Introduction to Neo4j and knowledge graphs; 2) How Neo4j’s underlying data model (the property graph model) relates to other graph models, including RDF; and 3) Practical demonstration of building a knowledge graph using NLP and SWEET ontology in Neo4j.

Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) Focus Week: June 14-24, 2021 (Apply by 6/9)
Gateway Focus Week is a virtual, two-week intensive workshop for innovative research teams. All disciplines welcome! During the Focus Week workshop, teams engage in hands-on activities that help them articulate the value of their work to key stakeholders. Participating teams produce a strong development, operations, and sustainability plan with a corresponding pitch deck that includes actionable goals. By working closely across teams, participants have the opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and challenges. Teams also learn how to access consultations, engagement opportunities, and other resources from the SGCI. Focus Week is offered twice per year and is subsidized by the National Science Foundation. This allows you to attend what would otherwise be a $2,500 per team event at no cost. You’ll leave Focus Week with a flexible toolkit that you can use as your project continues to mature. Learn more and register here.
CALL FOR PAPERS: Software Citation, Indexing, and Discoverability (due 7/16)
Software is increasingly essential to research. It can be viewed as both a tool to be recorded (for reproducibility) and cited (for credit) as a part of scholarly research works, as well as an output of research that can be used, reused, and further developed. Making this happen effectively leads to challenges in how it is cited, indexed, and discovered. These include challenges relating to: software metadata; identifiers for software and their relationship to those of other research objects; the role of other stakeholders such as indexes, libraries and registries; fostering adoption; development of related tools; and the role of the FAIR principles in this space. This special issue will focus on recent work addressing these challenges. Learn more here.
OGC Seeking Participants in 2021 Disaster Pilot
OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) has issued a call for participation in the 2021 Disaster Pilot, which will prototype and demonstrate end-to-end capabilities that integrate OGC standards, data, services, and state-of-the-art technologies to support decision makers and responders in times of crisis. Learn more about the Pilot and how you can participate here.
