ESIP UPDATE: 09.24.18

Good Morning –

We are very excited to welcome Megan Carter to our team starting October 1! You may know Megan from her work as a data manager for IEDA. She has a passion for lowering barriers (or “activation energy” as she calls it) to collaboration by fostering connections between people, information, and tools that enhance data and sample collection, stewardship, use, and reuse.

As you may have seen, NASA has put out an RFI for the NASA Science Mission Directorate Strategic Plan for Scientific Data and Computing. ESIP is coordinating a community response. Details are below if you are interested in contributing.

Finally, Are you building or developing a science gateway (portal, virtual research environment, digital interface)? If so, the Science Gateways Bootcamp could be for you. We are still looking for a few teams to join ESIP and the Science Gateways Community Institute for an abbreviated SGCI bootcamp, November 6-9 in Boulder, CO. Details are below, if you would like to join us.

If you would like to include an announcement in a future update, please send me a note.

Have a good week,
Erin

Federation News

Meet Megan Carter, ESIP's New Community Director
Megan holds bachelor’s (Wellesley College) and master’s (Pennsylvania State University) degrees in Geosciences, with a focus in environmental geochemistry. She began working with Columbia University’s Lamont Geoinformatics Research Group in 2014. There she supported the IEDA Data Facility in data curation, application testing, project management, user support, and community outreach. Megan has also served as project manager for 2 EarthCube Research Coordination Networks (The Internet of Samples in the Earth Sciences and Cyberinfrastructure and Collaboration for Paleogeosciences) and for the International Geo Sample Number (IGSN) Implementation Organization. Megan has organized and led a number of workshops and other events focusing on data and sample management best practices and how implementing such practices enables reusability of data and samples. Megan enjoys getting to know people and groups who have or are working on data challenges.

Coordinated ESIP Input to NASA Science Mission Directorate Strategic Plan for Data and Computing
Kevin Murphy,
Program Executive for Earth Science Data Systems, sent a note to ESIP-All last week announcing the RFI to NASA's SMD Strategic Plan for Data and Computing. There has been a bit of chatter about an ESIP coordinated response. I have started a Google Doc here with the questions, if you are interested in participating.

Science Gateways Bootcamp, Nov. 6-9 in Boulder — Apply Now!
ESIP is co-hosting a 4-day version of the Science Gateways Bootcamp: Strategies for Developing, Operating, and Sustaining Your Gateway. This is a workshop for leaders of gateways who want to further develop and scale their work. Participants engage in hands-on activities to help them articulate the value of their work to key stakeholders and to create a strong development, operations, and sustainability plan. The Bootcamp includes:

  • Core business strategy skills
  • Message refinement skills
  • Long-term sustainability strategies

By the end of the Bootcamp, participants will have developed a working hypothesis of their sustainability strategy and identified the key action steps to get there.

There is no cost to participate in the Bootcamp and most meals will be provided. The Bootcamp will take place November 6-9, 2018 in Boulder, CO. Applications will be accepted through Friday, September 28, 2018. Apply HERE.

“We were ‘learning by doing' with a real project of our own, which is the best way to learn something new—now I have a much greater awareness on how to communicate our project to a broader audience and practical tools to achieve that. Lectures can tell me things, but practicing these principles with professional supervision is a whole new experience that is very productive and rewarding. The Bootcamp structure breaks down the whole process into meaningful and digestible steps—I was learning and understanding more at each step.”

* New Machine Learning Cluster*
Anne Wilson is leading a new ESIP cluster on Machine Learning. Please find a description for the cluster here: http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Machine_Learning.

Machine learning is a very broad area. At our first telecon, we’ll see who is interested and survey our particular areas of interest. With that mind, we’ll try to establish an initial focus for the next few months. (Maybe the plan will be to make a plan.) We’ll also talk about holding a session at the ESIP Winter Meeting in January, 2019. > > If this topic interests you and you would like to participate in our first telecon, please fill out this Doodle poll by Friday, 9/21: > https://doodle.com/poll/m2e8mic37iqupu5q

4th Socioeconomic Value of Earth Observations Webinar: The “pipeline” of Earth science data to climate resilience and its value for real-world decision making

Date: Oct 2, 2018
Time: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET
Location: GoToMeeting; https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/813398909 (details below)

The ESIP Agriculture and Climate Cluster (ACC) has, over the past several years, been developing a “pipeline” to transform ongoing or recent agriculture / climate-related research and applications into case studies that become part of the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit (CRT; https://toolkit.climate.gov/). These CRT case studies document “how people are building resilience for their businesses and in their communities,” using relevant data and tools. To more explicitly capture the flow of data from initial observations, to derived information, to integration into end user decision-making, and to the values/benefits of decisions, the ACC is involved in an ongoing ESIP Lab-funded project, “Enabling the encoding and visualization of provenance metadata for better discovery and understanding of climate resilience strategies for agriculture-related decision-making.” Capturing this data-to-decisions (D2D) provenance can inform the value of socioeconomic data and information, and help contribute toward better real-world decision making for agriculture and climate resilience strategies.

This is the fourth in a six-part webinar series that explores the socioeconomic value of Earth Science data, information, and applications by addressing three main questions: How does Earth Science data contribute socioeconomic value and to societal benefits? What are different quantitative and qualitative ways that can be used to assess and measure this value? And, what are the challenges and opportunities for enhancing how Earth Science data contributes socioeconomic value? The flow of data from the initial observations, to the formulating of information, and its integration into decision-support systems is addressed.

Around the Federation
Trustworthy Data Repositories Cohort
A cohort of data repositories is being assembled to apply for  CoreTrustSeal certification as part of the American Geophysical Union Coalition Enabling FAIR Data Project. CoreTrustSeal certification demonstrates to a repository’s users and funders that they have been evaluated by an independent authority and endorsed for their trustworthiness. We are planning a series of webinars in the first part of October to provide more information on CoreTrustSeal and the certification process. The webinars will be recorded and made available for those unable to attend.

If you are interested in becoming a member of this cohort, please send email to Rebecca Koskela (rkoskela@unm.edu).  Also, please pass this on to anyone you think would be interested in joining the cohort.
