ESIP Update: New job opportunities and events 🌍

Welcome to the ESIP Update. We share ESIP news as well as articles, events, funding, and open jobs from the whole Earth science data community.

ESIP News and Events

Meeting Highlights Webinar

The ESIP community gathered virtually and in person last month. If you missed the meeting or want to hear about specific sessions, catch the ESIP Meeting Highlights Webinar on Wednesday, August 17 from 3-4:30 p.m. EDT.

From the future of open science to tutorials on Schema.org, AI-ready data, and PANGEO, the breakout sessions, workshops, and Unconference showcase community-driven innovation and collaboration. The three plenaries leaned into the gray spaces, ethics, and eye-opening challenges inherent in the theme “Data for All People.” Catch a recap of the 2022 July ESIP Meeting during the highlights webinar and and stay tuned for full recordings of our meeting sessions to be released on the ESIP YouTube Channel in early August.

“Data for All” T-shirt Fundraiser Open through Aug 10

ESIP's theme for 2022 is Data For All People. This fun t-shirt, designed by our friends at Element 84, showcases your work and style, plus it supports ESIP's mission at the same time.

The fundraiser closes Wednesday, Aug 10. We passed the 21 order minimum so anyone who ordered will receive their shirts in a couple weeks.

Reminder to Update Slack and Browsers

On September 1, Slack is updating its system requirements. If you don't want to lose access to the ESIP Slack, then update your app and browsers.

And join us on Slack if you haven't already!

People share great questions and ideas in #general, cool positions in #job-opportunities, cute critters in #esip-pets, and many Collaboration Areas use the space for brainstorming and keeping up with projects.

International Workshop on Geospatial Knowledge Graphs

Geospatial Knowledge Graphs (GeoKG 2022) is a small workshop at 2022 ACM SIGSPATIAL in Seattle on November 1. The call for papers is open.

AGU – NASA Ethics in AI/ML Survey (Due Aug 15)

Across scientific domains, AI and ML are playing increasingly important roles, incorporating more data from more sources. Existing standards for reproducibility and ethics in research can be challenged by AI and ML. This survey via Alchemer is designed to assess your views around some of these challenges, as well as opportunities looking ahead with these technologies. The results will inform the development of ethical standards for the use of AI and ML in research.

Climate and Forecast Metadata Conventions (CF) Workshop (Due Aug 30)

2022 CF Workshop will take place on September 13-15, hosted by IFCA at Santander, Spain. After two successful virtual editions (2020 and 2021), the 2022 edition is organized as a hybrid event with in-person and online participants. Registration is free but required by August 30, and plenary and hackathon sessions are still open for proposals.
