ESIP UPDATE: 02.05.18

Good morning all –

I'm happy to introduce you to a new ESIP Community Fellow, Ranalda Tsosie. Ranalda is Diné from Tółikan, AZ. She is currently a third year graduate student in the Individual Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program with an emphasis in Chemistry, Geosciences and Environmental Studies at the University of Montana. Her research interest is directed toward the development of remediation technology for the purpose of restoring contaminated water to acceptable levels. Ranalda will support the Science Communication Cluster – please give her warm welcome at the 2018 Summer Meeting.

I hope everyone has a fantastic week!

AB and the ESIP staff

P.S. Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.

P.P.S. Show your ESIP Flip and Tumble Bag out and about – add photos HERE.  On Twitter use the hashtag:#myesipbag… we'll pick the best shots for shout-outs on future Monday updates and put them on the map!

Data Management Training (DMT) Crowdsourcing Event
The Enabling FAIR Data project shepherded by the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) Data Department, the Research Data Alliance (RDA) and the ESIP's Data Management Training (DMT) Working Group are planning unique crowdsourcing opportunities for researchers and the research data community to learn more about the kinds of educational resources that are currently available to teach and  learn about research data management skills, methods, and practices. The first event is scheduled for Thursday, February 22nd from 9 am – 10:15 am PDT / 12 noon – 1:15 pm EDT.

Call-in details can be found on the ESIP Telecon website at: https://www.esipfed.org/telecons under the “DMTC Crowdsourcing #1” entry. We’ll be looking for educational resources to add to the DMT Clearinghouse that help enable researchers make their data FAIR (Findable – Accessible – Interoperable – Reusable) per the following seminar article: https://www.nature.com/articles/sdata201618.

Canadian Space Agency Questionnaire
Powered by Data wants to better understand the needs of potential users of space data and information in Canada. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is responsible for advancing the knowledge of space through science and using its discoveries for the good of Canadians. As such, the CSA has data and information that could potentially be made public. Completing this questionnaire will help CSA prioritise space data and information that better meets potential users needs.

If you have any interest in using space data and information, we invite you to complete this short survey. Please complete this survey before 11:59 PM on Thursday, February 8th, 2018. It should take approximately 3 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Please send this survey to your colleagues or other potentially interested parties. We are looking for wide participation.

Citizen Science Association Board
Nominations for the CSA Board are open! There are five open positions available, each with a three-year term beginning in May 2018.

Self-nominations and nominations of others are encouraged (please see job description and areas of expertise needed, below). If nominating someone else, please first confirm their interest in serving if elected. You will be asked to provide contact information for the nominee as well as a brief background on their relevant experience and skills. Those nominated will be contacted for additional information (i.e., curriculum vitae or resume, a statement addressing critical areas of experience and expertise being sought, and a statement addressing key questions about citizen science). Once that information is submitted, they will be considered for inclusion in the slate of nominees on which paid members of the Association will vote.

Nominations are due by February 26, 2018.

PREPData Launch
On February 7, 2018, the Partnership for Resilience and Preparedness, co-led by World Resources Institute and Future Earth, officially launched PREPdata at www.prepdata.org; the open-source, map-based platform provides easy, intuitive access to the information that adaptation decision-makers need to analyze vulnerability and build resilience to climate change. On PREPdata, users can explore climate, physical and socioeconomic datasets curated from highly credible sources like NASA, NOAA, USGS, ESA and more; map them to visualize a specific region’s vulnerability; track indicators most relevant to their work on customizable dashboards; and share their stories with adaptation professionals around the world.

NOTE: Job Opportunities (including internships) are now listed on the ESIP Job-Opportunities Slack Channel <https://esip-all.slack.com/messages/C4MMH7R8Q/>. You can post and find jobs there. If you are not yet on the ESIP Slack team, use the invite (above) to join.
