ESIP UPDATE: 04.30.18

Good Morning –

This email is a last reminder for submitting ESIP Summer Meeting sessions and any travel requests for speakers those sessions. Also, if you are interested in utilizing the ESIPHub, ESIP's Juypter Hub incubator project, reach out to the team at esiphub@esipfed.org.

In other news, we have a new cluster, the Information Managers Code Registry, meeting this week. In Around the Federation, there are details on the first E2SIP (ESIP in Australia) workshop happening May 28 and details on the latest Apache Open Climate Workbench (OCW) release.

Thanks & have a good week,

This Week's Collaboration Area Telecons:

  • Tuesday: CLEAN, Ag & Climate, EnviroSensing
  • Wednesday: Usability, Information Managers Code Registry
  • Thursday: Data Management Training Clearinghouse, Disaster Lifecycle

See the full telecon calendar here. Select the meeting you'd like to attend, login instructions are included in description.

Telecon Highlight: We have a new cluster starting to meet this week – The goal of the IM Code Registry Cluster is to develop a registry to facilitate discovery and reuse of code for the management of environmental data. Many information managers have written code to help format, clean, document, and publish environmental data sets. If this code was generalized and discoverable, it’s reuse could greatly improve the efficiency of data processing for many projects. The IM Code Registry Cluster will support this effort through development of best practices, a governance strategy, review guidelines for submitted code, and by planning for hackathons to populate the registry. Details are on the wiki and their first call will be Wednesday, May 2 at 2 ET.

E2SIP (Earth and Environmental Science Information Partners) Workshop at C3DIS
ESIP in the U.S. has been supporting the development of a sister organization in Australia that will coordinate on local issues and connect with ESIP where it makes sense. The group was seeded a year ago at the Linking Environmental Data and Samples Symposium and following the success of that small-scale coordination they are having a workshop co-located with C3DIS on May 28 to cover topics relevant to ESIP, with a data science thread and a thread on science enabled by informatics. These sessions will be broadcast and remote participation details will be shared.

[RELEASE] Apache Open Climate Workbench 1.3.0
The Apache Open Climate Workbench (OCW) Project Management Committee are pleased to announce the release and availability of OCW 1.3.0.

What is OCW? Apache Open Climate Workbench is an effort to develop software that performs climate model evaluation using model outputs from a variety of different sources the Earth System Grid Federation, the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment, the U.S. National Climate Assessment and the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program and temporal/spatial scales with remote sensing data from NASA, NOAA and other agencies. The toolkit includes capabilities for rebinning, metrics computation and visualization.
