ESIP UPDATE: 07.16.18

Good Morning from Tucson –

ESIP week is off to a great start with the DataOne User Group Meeting today and several sessions embedded in the ESIP Meeting on Tuesday. The full agenda for the ESIP Meeting is on Sched. Each session includes details to join remotely. These sessions will also be recorded for viewing later. We will also be tweeting up a storm with #ESIPFed & #ESIPCreates during Wednesday reception & Research as Art.

As we start this week, I am overwhelmed by the enormity of the ESIP community contributions this week and the last twenty years and I am so grateful that being the staff lead for ESIP is my job. We live by the saying, “if you want to go far, go together” and as we get ready to celebrate 20 years of ESIP making data matter together, I am using this slot to start thanking the huge number of people who made this meeting possible.

  • The Tucson locals – Thank you! ESIP has several member organizations in Tucson, but the individuals went above and beyond: Chuck Hutchinson & his wife, Jan, Tina Lee, Kim Patten & her team, Rowena Davis, Nirav Merchant, Tyson Swetnam, Jamie Ryan, Steve Richard and others have helped with local logistics and volunteered to pitch in anywhere we needed.
  • There are 96 sessions145 speakers, 8 contributions to Research as Art, over 240 attendees & a few meeting sponsors. When I talk about ESIP meetings, I always share that the meeting content, the session designs and the innovation are all community-contributed. It is amazing.
  • Visioneers! This meeting would not keep evolving without them. Led by Denise Hills, this group has inspired thoughtful tweaks and creative twists all to ensure that the meeting is inclusive, welcoming and is the most productive for the Earth science data & information community.
  • The ESIP Leadership, led by Christine White, ESIP President, has had ESIP front and center the first half of this year. From the Board to the Program Committee to the Collaboration Fellows and all the collaboration area leads, these are the ambassadors of ESIP and make it go between the meetings.
  • Finally, the ESIP staff team is a joy to work with. They have worked tirelessly on this meeting and ESIP is lucky to have them. I want to call out Annie Keyes, our Meetings & Logistics coordinator. This will be her last meeting and she will leave us officially on August 2. If you have been to a meeting since the 2014 Summer Meeting in Frisco, CO then you have met Annie K. She is the first face you see at Registration and she is the person that ensures that every details is considered and as close to perfect at our meeting. She has upped our meetings game and she will be so missed. I have started a digital card for her here if you would like to leave her a note of thanks.

It goes without saying that this list is not comprehensive. ESIP is turning 20 and it means we are standing among and on the shoulders of giants. The culture, the innovation and the massive tide change in Earth science toward making data matter so much, is all a testament to everyone reading this newsletter and to everyone that has been part of ESIP and the Earth science data pipeline over the last 20 years plus.

Post-ESIP we will take a summer hiatus, but Monday Updates will be back in August. In the meantime, submit your AGU abstracts and get invited Fall Meeting AGU speakers submitted by this Wednesday, July 18!

To those coming to Tucson, see you soon and to the rest thanks for reading –
