ESIP UPDATE: 11.30.2020

Hi ESIP!

Can you believe it is the last day of November 2020? Can you believe three weeks of an ALL VIRTUAL AGU Fall Meeting are about to kick off? Can you believe we've managed to make it to December!

Amidst all of this, I'm excited to remind you that Ignite@AGU is happening AND it is celebrating its 10th year! This Wednesday at 16:30 (ET) you'll hear from ten amazing speakers that span discipline and career stage. Talks include:

  • Roman Dial (Alaska Pacific University): Walking treeline across the Brooks Range: What's happening in America's Arctic mountain wilderness?
  • Laura Guertin (Penn State Brandywine): Stitching Through Science Communication – With Quilts
  • Robert Simmon (Planet): Earth at an Acute Angle
  • Jonathan O'Brien (NASA ARSET/SSAI): Anxiety, Land Cover Classification, and Your Brain
  • Lauren Haygood (The University of Tulsa): A Tale of Two Rivers Meets Citizen Science
  • Lorena Medina Luna (NCAR): Silencing your inner saboteur: Succeeding in spite of imposter syndrome
  • Joanna Young (University of Alaska, Fairbanks): Six surprising ways that glacier loss impacts humankind
  • Ryan McGranaghan (ASTRA): Discover the space between disciplines
  • Jeffrey Allenby (Center for Geospatial Solutions): From satellites to cell phones: Working smarter not harder in the Conservation World
  • Emil Cherrington (NASA SERVIR):  Earth observation science, meet SciComm

Search the AGU Scientific Program for Ignite 2020 for how to connect. I hope to see you there!

ESIP Lab 2020 Winter Request for Proposals (due 1/29)
The ESIP Lab supports the Earth science community in building innovative, applied technologies through funding and community input. Additionally, projects are encouraged to have a learning objective as part of their deliverables. Through this Request for Proposals (RFP), the ESIP Lab seeks projects that last 6 – 8 months, with a maximum budget of $10,000. Learn more about esipfed.org/rfp.

ESIP Meeting Registration OPEN NOW
Registration is now open for the 2021 Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Winter Meeting (January 26th-29th, 2021; Online). For over 20 years, ESIP meetings have brought together the most innovative thinkers and leaders around Earth observation data, thus forming a community dedicated to making Earth observations more discoverable, accessible and useful to researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and the public. Register now through the early registration deadline of 12/21 to get the best rates. Help Inform Future Data Management Education for Science Data (10 min. survey)
From (Bradley Wade Bishop, Assoc. Professor at University of Tennessee): You are being invited to take part in a study on science data management because you are a critical agent as data management is part of your work. Your participation is completely voluntary and responses will be kept confidential. The research is being conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee. I know your time is valuable, but by taking around 10 minutes to participate in this study, you will inform future data management education for science data. An increased understanding of jobs that contain data management should improve access and use of data to benefit all of society. Follow the link for more information: Job Analyses for Science Data Managers.

You will be asked to describe your job tasks and background. Your responses will be anonymous and linked by a unique identifier for any analysis; however, all findings will be reported in the aggregate. I greatly appreciate your contribution to the study. If you have questions at any time about the study or you experience problems, you may contact Bradley Wade Bishop wade.bishop@utk.edu or 865-974-2775 (office). If you have any questions or concerns regarding your rights as a subject in this study, you may also contact the Office of Research Compliance Officer at (865) 974-7697.

Open Science for a Global Transformation: Call for Papers for a Special Collection in Data Science Journal
In June 2020, CODATA coordinated and published ‘Open Science for a Global Transformation’, a response to the UNESCO consultation from a number of partner international data organizations. The first draft of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science was released for feedback from member states and the scientific community in early October 2020. To encourage further discussion around the issues addressed in ‘Open Science for a Global Transformation’ and the draft Recommendation on Open Science, the global research data community is invited to share their views, critiques and positions in an open discussion prompted by the draft recommendation and the CODATA-coordinated document. The intention is to create a forum for debate and ultimately a body of reasoned argumentation which can be referenced throughout the UNESCO process. In the Data Science Journal, this will also form a significant body of scholarly material exploring and defining issues around Open Science. One of the venues to be used for this discussion will be a special collection in the CODATA Data Science Journal. To learn more, please see https://datascience.codata.org/.

Environmental Data Initiative (EDI) Summer Fellowship Program: Request for Applications to Host a Fellow
EDI is now accepting applications from research projects and field stations interested in hosting a fellow from mid-June to mid August 2021. The application deadline is 12/14/20 with 10 total fellowships likely to be supported. The fellows will have the opportunity to work remotely, though EDI would prefer in-person training at the host site if circumstances allow. The fellowships are intended for undergraduate, graduate and recent postgraduate students. EDI will train each fellow, who will then gain hands-on experience by participating in data preparation and publication with scientists and information managers from specific host research sites, with EDI support. See this link for more information. Contact Susanne Grossman-Clarke (grossmanclar@wisc.edu) with any questions.

Please help us tell others! The Virtual Data Help Desk, which is sponsored by EarthCube and further supported by AGU and the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), provides researchers with opportunities to engage with informatics experts familiar with their scientific domain to learn about skills and techniques that will help further their research and make their data and software open and FAIR. The Virtual Data Help Desk will be staffed with experts from the Earth science informatics community to answer data-related questions and to demo useful resources.

When: December 7th-11th, 14th-16th, 2020 during #AGU20 Fall Meeting
Where: Online. Follow the #DataHelpDesk on twitter here.
