ESIP UPDATE: 12.03.18

Good Morning, ESIP –

AGU is certainly on most of our minds, but first, I would like to share a quick announcement about the 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting and remind you to register to attend by the early registration deadline of December 15th. ESIP is very excited to announce that Dr. Michael Freilich, Director of the Earth Science Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA, will give a plenary talk on Thursday, January 17th. The meeting is shaping up to be a great one. We hope to see you there.

Now back to AGU. As you plan your schedule for next week, please don't forget to join ESIP at the various Data Fair events, including Town Halls, Workshops, and the Data Help Desk at Exhibit Hall Booth #513. Thank you to those of you who signed up to share your tools and expertise with others!

Also, please plan to join us for Ignite@AGU, an evening of exhilarating lightning talks and free food hosted jointly by ESIP and NASA's Applied Sciences Program. If you have never been to an Ignite@AGU, I strongly encourage you to check it out. Ignite talks are not your average scientific conference talks — speakers are encouraged to push boundaries and be creative, funny and thought-provoking, all while adhering to a strict rapid-pace presentation format.

Looking forward to seeing you at upcoming events!

Best,
Megan

Join the 6th and Final Socioeconomic Value of Earth Science Data Webinar:
Building Societal Capacity: The Educational Value of Earth System Science data, information, and applications

Date: December 4, 2018
Time: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET
Location: GoToMeeting; https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/725368069

For the sixth and final webinar in our series, we explore the value and benefits that Earth Science data bring to society, including its contributions to economics and quality of life through educational systems. The challenges and opportunities for enhancing Earth System and Climate Science societal benefits through education are broadly addressed. Much of the panel will focus on the CLEAN project, a large database collection of educational resources and a support network for teaching about climate and energy topics. CLEAN provides opportunities for educators to use earth science data in their classrooms, enhancing student experience and societal benefit by increasing understanding of climate science. Our panel will also discuss database management and analysis of database use for CLEAN. Our panel represents expertise from education, earth and climate science, data and informatics, engineering, social sciences, and policy. Panelists provide examples of techniques and approaches that can be used to enhance educational value and highlight some communities of practice that are currently addressing these issues. For more information about the webinar and series, see goo.gl/VCsrXo.
