ESIP UPDATE: 08.6.18

Good Morning –

This Tuesday we will hold the second webinar in our series on the socioeconomic value of Earth observations entitled, “The Information Pathway for Earth Science Data: Between Supplier and User,” details are below. This webinar series is a way that we are highlighting one of our 2015-2020 strategic goals: Promote techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information and applications.

For those attending the Ecological Society of America look for ESIP, EDI, DataOne, the Arctic Data Center, DataCite and CyVerse in the exhibit hall supporting a Data Help Desk (around booth 625). Data Help Desk was started last December at AGU Fall Meeting and is intended to be an in-person resource for scientist looking for data management help. Karl Benedict and Nancy Hoebelheinrich are representing ESIP and sharing the Data Management Training Clearinghouse (dmtclearinghouse.esipfed.org).

If you would like to include an announcement in a future update, please send me a note.

Have a good week,
Erin

Telecon Highlight: The Information Pathway for Earth Science Data: Between Supplier and User

Date: Aug 7, 2018
Time: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET
Location: GoToMeeting

As the second webinar in our series, “The Socioeconomic Value of Earth Science Data, Information, and Applications”, we explore the concepts behind the transference and usage of data and tools (information pathway) as they move between suppliers and end users, and how the conflict between the demands of these two ends of this path can be leveraged to produce better tools and more useful information. Different approaches for understanding, analyzing, and streamlining this information pathway are presented, such as value chain analysis and decision trees. Our international panel represents both the private and public sector, and presents expertise in economics, policy, environmental and earth sciences, and information systems. For all details on this webinar & the full series see the Google Doc.

Note: See the full telecon calendar here. Select the meeting you'd like to attend, login instructions are included in description.

Recap from Esri User Conference Science Symposium
Many have asked for a recap of the Esri User Conference Science Symposium of July 10th, featuring the amazing keynote of climate scientist, Dr. Camilo Mora of the University of Hawaii. Dr. Mora is unable to release his full slide deck of his keynote “Worry & Hope: Climate Change is Worse than you Think but Still Reversible,” due to the sensitivity of some material. But please find the Wakelet social media compilation at https://wakelet.com/wake/7ef0545e-d8c7-4aed-8e47-17a22ad98480. And you can download the introductory slide deck of Esri Chief Scientist Dawn Wright at http://esriurl.com/symposium18.
