ESIP UPDATE: 05.01.2019

Good Morning ESIP,

Happy May! This morning I am pleased to share with you a look back at 2018 through the release of ESIP's 2018 Annual Report, a document that highlights goals, activities, and champions in line with last year's theme of Promoting techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information, and applications. As the report aptly states, it is only with you that ESIP continues to elevate the importance of making data matter. We are so grateful for your support and contributions.

From looking back to looking ahead, there is much to look forward to in the near future, including a webinar hosted by the ESIP Cloud Computing Cluster next Monday (5/6) at 1 pm ET, featuring lightning talks from 10+ community members on their work in cloud computing.

Also of note is “Now Hear This! A FUNding Friday Sonification Project,” a recent blog post by ESIP Community Fellow Patrick Chandler. FUNding Friday is an annual mini-grant competition held at the ESIP Summer Meeting, yet another reason to consider joining us in Tacoma this July!

Have a great week everyone,
Megan

ESIP Cloud Computing Cluster Lightning Talks
Join the next Cloud Computing Cluster telecon on Monday 5/6 at 1 pm ET for 10+ lightning talks from community members on their work in cloud computing. You'll also have a chance to meet new cluster leaders (Patrick Quinn of Element 84, Inc. and Zhenlong Li of University of South Carolina), and to give your input on upcoming activities. See here for connection info.

More about the Cloud Computing Cluster: As geospatial computing continues to demand more volume, variety, and velocity (core characteristics of big data), the ESIP Cloud Computing Cluster helps people tackle these challenges through cloud-based architectures, technologies, and software. By bringing together users, developers, and researchers from industry, government, and academia, this Cluster provides a virtual platform for ESIP members and broader communities to share relevant knowledge and experience. The Cluster also aims to help foster collaborations among different organizations and individuals to work together to better apply cloud technologies to today’s data challenges.

Now Hear This! A FUNding Friday Sonification Project
In a new blog post, ESIP Community Fellow Patrick Chandler describes his 2018 FUNding Friday Project to design a usable science sonification for visually impaired audiences and for the general public that motivates listeners to consider appropriate actions to combat climate change. FUNding Friday is an annual mini-grant competition associated with ESIP’s Summer Meeting. Learn more here.

Data Citation Guidelines Version 2 Posted for Comment
ESIP's Citation Guidelines Cluster, a collaboration between members of the Data Stewardship Committee and the Software & Services Citation Cluster, has developed the Data Citation Guidelines Version 2. These guidelines are updated from Version 1 to include a refinement of core concepts and a mapping of concepts to more metadata dialects. This version also provides new guidance on dynamic data citation and contains a new section on resolving citations. Read and comment on the Data Citation Guidelines Version 2 here by 5/22.

Next ‘Data in Action' Webinar: The 4th National Climate Assessment
In the third webinar in the ESIP 2019 Webinar Series ‘Data in Action: Increasing the Use and Value of Earth Science Data and Information,’ a panel of speakers will share how the 4th National Climate Assessment (NCA4) was developed, including what standards of transparency and traceability were used for data included in it, and how the NCA4 is being used now to engage with communities and inform decision-making.
