ESIP UPDATE: November 28, 2016

Good morning all – Short week, last week, so a short update.
We trust you all had a great Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. The Avian Cuisine Cluster photos are outstanding!

Final chance: Nomination time for ESIP of the Year! You can self-nominate or give a shout out to another ESIP.
And we are looking forward to seeing a lot of you at the AGU. You can stop by the booth or catch us at the town halls. If you want to do a demo at the booth let me know.

Ignite@AGU will be great fun.  Join us for an evening of lightning talks!

Remember, if there is anything you'd like to see included in next week's Monday Update, send it to Bruce Caron (brucecaron AT esipfed.org).

Best,
Bruce

ESIP of the Year Award

Will the winner be your org? Nominate or self-nominate, deadline is November 30th. This award honors an ESIP member organization that best exemplifies the spirit of ESIP in one or more areas. Nominate any ESIP member organization including your own. Nomination form info is here. Submissions are also considered for success stories to share in the Summer and Winter Meetings, annual reports,  Member Highlights, or other ways to showcase positive collaboration and impact. If you have any questions, please contact Danie Kinkade <dkinkade@whoi.edu> or Christine White <cwhite@esri.com>.

Win Travel Support for Drupalcon 2017
The ESIP Drupal Working Group can help you get to Drupalcon April 24-28, 2017 in Baltimore, MD. The goal is to have an active ESIP/Science on Drupal presence at the convention and to report back to ESIP on new Drupal activities that are important for ESIP members to know about. And to identify potential speakers for Drupal Working Group telecons/breakouts. Here is the information you need to apply.

GeoSemantics Symposium, Tuesday, January 10, ESIP Winter Meeting Hotel
The ESIP Semantic Technologies Committee (STC) is hosting a GeoSemantics Symposium which will be taking place on Tuesday January 10th, 2017 in the Middlebrook Room, Bethesda North Marriott, Bethesda, MD. You will notice that this is co-located one day prior to the ESIP Winter meeting so we hope that people can make it and provide input into what is shaping up to be an exciting day connecting several communities.
With the renewed interest in the Semantic Sensor Network Ontology primarily driven by the W3C Spatial Data on the Web (SDW) working group and the current interest in drone technologies and their application to the Earth Sciences, we hope that both Drone and Semantic Technologies communities @ESIP can connect at the GeoSemantics Symposium.
At this stage the STC is looking to:

  1. Gauge individual/group interest in the event. If you are interested in attending, please register your interest. We will be hosting the meeting remotely as well so please register your interest even if you cannot make it in person as we will accommodate that.
  2. Interested to hear from people who would like to demo software/hardware relating to the topic of GeoSemantics.
  3. Interested to hear from ongoing/past/future Testbed projects which do/could relate to the topic of GeoSemantics.
  4. Interested to hear general comments about what you would appreciate from an agenda on this topic. Please send your comments to the chairs of the STC.

Core Trustworthy Data Repository Requirements
After an extensive period of public commentary and after conducting test certifications, the ICSU World Data System (WDS) and the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) Board are pleased to announce the availability of the first version of their universal and unified Core Trustworthy Data Repository Requirements.
The catalogue of requirements was developed through a DSA–WDS partnership Working Group within the Research Data Alliance (RDA). The group built on inherent complementarity between the criteria previously established by the two organizations to harmonize unified and universal requirements reflecting the core characteristics of trustworthy data repositories.
The DSA Board and the WDS Scientific Committee are working together to further align their certification procedures and ensure that the research community will have a single, clear reference point for seeking Core Trustworthy Data Repository certification.
