ESIP UPDATE: 12.10.18

Good Morning, ESIP –

It is AGU Fall Meeting week, so as you plan your schedule for this week, please don't forget ESIP! Details are below for the Data Fair and Ignite@AGU.

Here are my top 5 picks for the week:

This is a busy week, but I would be remiss if I did not remind you to make your travel arrangements for the 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting. The hotel block and early registration will close a week from this Friday, Dec. 21.

Thanks for reading & hope to see many of you this week!

ESIP @ AGU

Over the last few years ESIP has led the Fall Meeting Data Fair to increase the presence of Earth science data beyond the informatics track.

The Data FAIR includes Town Halls, Workshops, and a Data Help Desk hosted by ESIP and staffed with experts from the Earth and space science informatics community to answer your data questions and demo tools and platforms. Feel free to tell others about these exciting events and stop by booth 513!

Here are the places that ESIP staff are presenting:

A few ESIP partners put together nice AGU summaries as well ->  DataOne and the URSSI November Update

Data FAIR at AGU Fall Meeting
The Data FAIR at AGU Fall Meeting provides researchers with opportunities to engage with informatics experts familiar with their scientific domain and learn about skills and techniques that help further their research and make  data and software matter, open and FAIR.

Ignite@AGU 2018
ESIP and NASA's Applied Sciences Program are thrilled to co-sponsor Ignite@AGU 2018. As in past years, the event will feature a number of quick and exciting presentations with auto-advancing slides. Presenters are encouraged to “Enlighten us, but make it quick!” The event will end with live music performed by NASA scientist, John Bolten and his band, Geraldine!

The event, which will take place on Wednesday December 12th from 6:30-8:30 pm at Busboys and Poets (450 K St NW, Washington, DC 20001), will include free appetizers and a cash bar. Learn more and watch previous year's talks here.

Register NOW for the 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting
The meeting is shaping up to be a great one. Please note that the early registration deadline is fast approaching (December 21st). Register now to avoid paying more. ESIP is very excited to announce that Dr. Michael Freilich, Director of the Earth Science Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA, will give a plenary talk on Thursday, January 17th. Check out the rest of the draft schedule and look out for the final schedule to be released shortly here.

Fall ESIP Lab Request for Incubator Proposals
Through this RFP, the ESIP Lab will provide seed funding for incubator-style projects. Incubator projects run 6-8 months in duration and lie in the realm of good ideas ready to be tried out. We have identified the following topics as areas of need in the Earth science community. Proposals that address these topics will be given priority:

  • Proof-of-concept for emerging technologies slated for operational use.
  • Modernization of Earth science workflows using open source, machine learning and cloud computing.
  • Extension of open source software critical to collecting, distributing, or analyzing Earth observations.

Multiple awards are anticipated up to $10,000 each. Learn more here. Contact lab@esipfed.org with questions.

New ESIP Partners up for Comment
ESIP has received a number of new partnership applications recently. The Assembly Voting Representatives will review and vote on these applications soon. You can view the applications here. Thanks very much to the Partnership Committee for their great work and to all those who submitted applications.

Comment on Software and Service Citation Guidelines
ESIP's Software and Services Citations Cluster has formulated guidelines on how to cite software and services. If you are interested in reviewing the guidelines, please visit this document and comment by January 9th.

Vote on USGS Community for Data Integration (CDI) Statements of Interest
All CDI members are invited to vote on submitted SOIs. Principal investigators gave 1-minute lightning presentations about their SOIs last week. These presentations have been posted on the RFP wiki page. Voters are expected to read and consider all SOIs. Guidance for voting and evaluation criteria are posted on the CDI wiki page. Voting is now open and will close on December 14th, 2018. Contact cdi@usgs.gov with questions.

Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) Announces Science Ambassadors Program
SGCI is pleased to announce a new program to help end users of science gateways publicize their research and teaching accomplishments by promoting the use of gateways in research or education or in training others in the use of a gateway. The Science Ambassadors Program provides travel support for attendance at relevant events in exchange for blog posts and advice. A brief application is due on January 16th, 2019 for a one-year term.

NASA Giovanni Short Course at Upcoming AMS Meeting
The NASA GES DISC is hosting a short course prior to the upcoming American Meteorological Society (AMS) 99th Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ: An Introduction to Using the NASA Giovanni System for Multidisciplinary Research and Applications. The short course will take place Sunday, January 6, 2019, and will give participants the necessary knowledge and skills to perform multi-disciplinary research using Giovanni. Along with learning how to use Giovanni, participants also will learn about GES DISC’s large collection of NASA Earth science data, have the opportunity to conduct several hands-on data visualization scenarios demonstrating Giovanni capabilities, and learn how to use Giovanni to create multidisciplinary data analyses. For more information, please contact James Acker (james.g.acker@nasa.gov) or Zhong Liu (zhong.liu-1@nasa.gov).

Post-doc Opportunity through USGS Mendenhall Research Fellowship Program
A 2-year postdoctoral fellowship is now available on “Bridging the Disconnects Between Science and Decision Making.” The Mendenhall Fellow will be a member of the USGS Biogeographic Characterization Branch of the Core Science Systems Mission Area. She/he will interact primarily in a group partnership with the USGS Science and Decisions Center of the Energy and Minerals Mission Area and the Geosciences & Environmental Change Science Center. The Biogeographic Characterization Branch is actively engaged in providing technical services to enhance data use and integration and to document data provenance. Areas of focus within the biogeographic sciences include a) improving information transfer between scientific and professional communities, b) establishing techniques to integrate and evaluate diverse information used for scientific purposes and decision-making activities, c) advancing the use of analysis tools, including techniques used to support the decision-making process, and d) increasing productivity and reproducibility of scientific investigations using open source code.
