ESIP Student Fellows Announced for 2016
ESIP has appointed seven student fellows who will contribute their expertise to a variety of Earth science data issues.
16 November 2015 | Boulder, CO — Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) has announced its 2016 class of student fellows. The fellowship provides Earth and computer science graduate students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to bridge the gap between informatics and Earth Science, and work closely with professionals in ESIP’s interdisciplinary, cross-sector groups on current Earth science problems.
The four new ESIP student fellows are: Alison Adams, University of Vermont, Envirosensing cluster; Chris Beltz, University of Wyoming, Agriculture and Climate cluster; Fei Hu, George Mason University, Cloud Computing cluster; and Sam Silva, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Data Discovery cluster.
The three ESIP student fellows selected to serve an additional term are Lindsay Barbieri, University of Vermont, Data Analytics cluster; Sean Barberie, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Disaster cluster; and Chung-Yi Hou, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Data Stewardship cluster.
The student fellows are a vital part of the ESIP community, infusing new energy and ideas into ESIP and linking the community to innovative work, new institutions and communities. The primary roles of the fellows are to participate in and document the activities of their cluster, present their research at the biannual ESIP meetings, and expand their science and data management skills. As the fellows become more familiar with the activities of their cluster, they may choose to integrate their own research into these activities, which can result in publication and additional funding opportunities.
“Being an ESIP student fellow and working with a network of professionals who dedicate their careers to advancing Earth science will be special, fun and rewarding. I’m excited for this new class of fellows and look forward to working with and becoming friends with them,” said Emily Law, ESIP Vice President.
One of the returning student fellows, Lindsay Barbieri, spoke for all seven fellows when she expressed her enthusiasm for participating in the fellowship: “The experience of working alongside scientists, researchers and students from all sectors to help build and maintain a vibrant community around Earth science information is truly invaluable.”
