January 15, 2015 — The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2015 Martha Maiden Lifetime Achievement Award and the President’s award. Both awards recognized community members that have made outstanding contributions to ESIP and the broader Earth science data and informatics community.

Emily Law, JPL, ESIP Vice President and Christine White, Esri, ESIP Products and Services chair were both awarded the ESIP President’s award recognizing their outstanding achievements over the last year. The President’s award was created in 2012 and has been given annually since then to honor outstanding ESIP community members.

Dr. Ted Habermann, Director of Earth Science at The HDF Group, was awarded the 2015 Martha Maiden Lifetime Achievement Award by the ESIP Federation. Emily Law, ESIP Vice President said that, “Ted’s significant contributions, influence and leadership in metadata and interoperability, involving national and international institutions, epitomize the cooperative spirit and vision of the ESIP Federation.” During his acceptance remarks, Habermann acknowledged many inspirational interactions at ESIP meetings in the past as formative to his work. He went on to encourage new ESIP attendees to take advantage of ESIP as a venue to meet leaders in the Earth science informatics field. The award was established in 2009 in honor of Martha E. Maiden, NASA Program Executive for Earth Data Systems, for her leadership, dedication and tireless efforts to nurture the ESIP Federation into a vibrant and mature organization.

The ESIP Federation feels that is vital to recognize members for their significant and primarily voluntary contributions to the community in order to further interoperability. “It was a great privilege to preside over the ‘awards' lunch this year, where we recognized primarily voluntary contributions over the last year, and substantial service to the community spanning many years.” said Peter Fox, President of ESIP (2014-2015). Details for the awards can be found on the website: https://esipfed.org/peer-recognition.

The ESIP Federation is a consortium of Earth science data and technology professionals spanning government (NASA, NOAA, EPA, USGS, NSF), academia and the private sectors (both commercial and nonprofit). The organization is dedicated to transforming research data and information into useful and usable data and information products for decision makers, policy makers and the public. The Foundation for Earth Science provides administrative and staff support to the ESIP Federation.
