As a friendly reminder before many go offline next week, please prepare for the 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting by registering and reserving your hotel room; the hotel block and early rates end this Friday (registration will increase to $515 for members and $650 for non-members).

DEADLINE TODAY: ESIP Lab Incubator ProposalsBuilding a SpatioTemporal Feature Registry

Through this Request for Proposals (RFP), the ESIP Lab will provide seed funding for incubator-style projects. Incubator projects run 6-8 months and lie in the realm of good ideas ready to be tried out. Project budgets should not exceed $10,000.

We have identified the following topics as areas of need in the Earth science community, and for this RFP, project proposals that address these areas will be given priority.

  • Proof-of-concept for emerging technologies slated for operational use.
  • Modernization of Earth science workflows using open source, machine learning and cloud computing.
  • Extension of open source software critical to collecting, distributing, or analyzing Earth observations.

ESIP Lab Funded Projects Wins NGA Challenge

The ESIP-Lab funded Geoweaver project was one of the selected winners to the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) Agricultural Field Delineation from Satellite Imagery challenge. NGA sought ideas for a system that can rapidly, accurately, and automatically delineate agricultural field outlines from multiple satellite imagery sources every year, storing the results in an efficient data structure for year to year comparison and aggregation into common land units. They sought a system that could be applied to large homogenous fields typical of the Midwestern United States as well as heterogeneous fields typically found in sub-Saharan Africa.

ESIP Lab Community Fellow: Benjamin Roberts-Pierel

The ESIP Lab is excited to have Benjamin Roberts-Pierel as its community fellow for 2019! Ben is a PhD student in geography in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. Ben studies changing snowpack in the eastern Columbia River basin and how it is related to runoff and downstream water use. His research relies primarily on satellite-based remote sensing data, but he is also very interested in the use of existing in-situ monitoring data (e.g. USGS StreamStats and NRCS SNOTEL) and the collection of field data for validation of the remote sensing products. Ben is particularly interested in ephemeral and intermittent snow (snow that does not persist through the winter season) and how combining multi-temporal and spatial resolution sensors can allow us to better understand this component of annual snow cover.
