Greetings all –

Happy August! Thanks to all who attended the ESIP Summer Meeting in Tucson, AZ last month – it was great to see many of you in person! A few quick things of note. Keep your eyes open for the call for new ESIP Community Fellows later this month; this is a great opportunity for graduate students and post-docs. The Lab is attending the SGCI Bootcamp this week in Chicago, IL; we'll share some of those outcomes next month!

Lastly, I'd like to share a quick note from the American Geosciences Institute (AGI). AGI is looking for participants to take a 15-minute survey about where the community finds reliable sources of geoscientific information and how these assets are accessed. Please share your experiences by participating in the 20-question survey, found at http://bit.ly/GeoInfoServicesDetailed. The survey deadline is Friday, August 24th, 2018.

Best,
Annie Burgess
Director, ESIP Lab

ESIP Joins the NumFOCUS Community Alliance

To better engage the user and developer communities that support NumFOCUS projects, ESIP has joined the NumFOCUS Community Alliance. The NumFOCUS Community Alliance is a coalition of organizations who share our commitment to increase collaboration, project sustainability, and diversity in the scientific computing community. Members of the Alliance are nonprofit organizations or community groups whose mission intersects with our own and reflects support for open source scientific computing.

We believe there are excellent opportunities for ESIP and NumFOCUS community members to tackle Earth science data and software challenges together!

FUNding Friday Winners!

Once again, ESIP held its annual FUNding Friday competition at the 2018 Summer Meeting. Meeting attendees came together Thursday night to ideate and draw-up their pitches to be presented Friday morning. Three member and three student posters were awarded, winning $5000 and $3000 respectively.

This year's winning posters were presented by: James Gallagher (OPeNDAP), Ben Galewsky (NDS), Shayna Skolnik (Navteca), Connor Scully-Allison (Univ. Nevada, Reno), Patrick Chandler (Univ. Colorado, Boulder), and Ranalda Tsosie (Univ. Montana).

Check out their posters here.

Challenge Highlight: Blue Planet Hackathon

From a population of about 700 million people in the mid-1700s, the current world population now stands at 7.6 billion, indicating a growth of over 950 percent in less than 300 years.

This unbelievably rapid rate of population growth and events such as industrialization, the impact on the environment has been catastrophic. Extinction of animal and bird species, pollution of air, water and soil, climate change, global warming, and the reduction of natural resources and forest cover are but a few outcomes of not caring for our planet.

The situation is critical, and it is important to gather all resources and work cohesively towards protecting this beautiful planet. This hackathon aims to bring together developers, designers, thinkers, and creators to build a better and more sustainable future.

With technology paving the way for the future, it makes sense that we leverage it to save the planet we call home. Be a part of the Blue Planet Hackathon and let your ideas make a difference.
