Recreational Drones in STEM Education: Webinars and Workshop

In 2016, the ESIP Education Committee is focusing on the use of recreational drones for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning. We're looking for science and technology teachers from middle, high school and community colleges to join ESIP's educational community. If you fit this description and are interested in using recreational drones (those that weigh less than half a pound do not require FAA registration) for education, please join our upcoming webinars and apply to our July workshop.

Drones in STEM Education Workshop
Tuesday, July 19 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (during the ESIP Summer Meeting)

Fifteen successful applicants will receive a drone, test and refine activity ideas, and then use these activities with youth in the fall. The workshop will prepare attendees to facilitate drone-based STEM learning in clubs, classrooms or science fair activities.

Participation is free and no prior experience with drones is required. Workshop attendees will each receive a drone and are also eligible to receive a $200 time and travel stipend. Note that those who participate in the webinars will receive priority enrollment for the July workshop. We especially encourage pairs of teachers who work at the same school to apply so they can support one another’s efforts. Application information coming soon.

These activities are sponsored by NASA, NOAA and ESIP. For more information, contact Margaret Mooney (Margaret.Mooney at ssec.wisc.edu) or LuAnn Dahlman (luann.dahlman at noaa.gov).
