Earth Observation (EO) for Land Management
TreeMap and FuelMap: using imputed forest inventory data to calculate fire risk under different land management scenarios
Abstract:
In 2009, scientists at the Forest Service’s Missoula Fire Sciences Lab in Montana saw the need for a tree-level dataset of US forests. The scientists envisioned using the dataset to estimate wildfire risk to forest carbon and the effect of fuel treatments on fire risk. Now, 16 years later, not only has the imputed TreeMap dataset fulfilled the goal, but it has an accompanying FuelMap of surface fuels, and the datasets are being actively used by land managers and scientists for estimation of carbon and fire risk, among other purposes.
Speaker:
Dr. Karin Riley — Research Ecologist at the US Forest Service’s Missoula Fire Sciences Lab. Karin leads a team that works on vegetation mapping and wildfire risk mapping under different land management and climate scenarios.
This Cluster—also known as the Applied Earth Observations Innovations Partnership (AEOIP)—
fosters interagency partnerships to advance Earth Observation–based land management.
By connecting EO experts with land management experts, we seek to increase awareness of new EO
capabilities, as well as research and operational management challenges, in order to help
formulate solutions through effective integration of data.
