May 21: BLM’s Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) strategy: Data in Decision-Making
Tim Assal, BLM National Operations Center, Geospatial Ecologist
Abstract
The BLM manages approximately one-tenth of the surface area of the United States, with the majority of the jurisdiction being drylands. The BLM’s Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM) strategy provides a standardized approach for measuring natural resource condition and trends. We collaborate with federal partners to leverage our AIM field data into fractional vegetation cover of major plant functional types. This seminar will highlight how field data and remote sensing products can be used together to generate more robust, credible, and practical information for land management. My goal is to engage the broader NASA ARID community on the availability and utility of BLM resource monitoring data and tools, fostering broader adoption, investigation and collaboration in decision-making in dryland environments.
Speaker Bio
Tim is the Remote Sensing Coordinator for the Assessment, Inventory & Monitoring (AIM) program at the Bureau of Land Management. Prior to his current position, he worked in academia and federal research studying the effects of disturbance on forest and shrubland ecosystems through a combination of field studies, satellite sensors, and computer modeling.

To maintain a secure environment and ensure our community lists are up-to-date, we perform an annual reset each January. You will be invited to re-register for your preferred Collaboration Areas at the start of the new year.
This Cluster – also known as the Applied Earth Observations Innovations Partnership (AEOIP) – fosters interagency partnerships to advance Earth Observation–based land management. By connecting EO experts with land management experts, we seek to increase awareness of new EO capabilities, as well as research and operational management challenges, in order to help formulate solutions through effective integration of data.
