ESIP UPDATE: 10.22.18

Good Morning –

Thanks for the warm welcome you have given to Megan Carter, ESIP's Community Director over the last few weeks. She has hit the ground running and will be doing two Monday Updates a month, joining all collaboration area telecons and getting to know the clusters and starting to dive into meeting planning wrangling sessions.

As we head toward the end of October there are a few things to note:

  • We are in nomination season and looking forward to 2019. We are looking for 2019 ESIP Leadership (includes travel to ESIP), the Partnership Committee has opened nominations for the ESIP Partner of the Year Award and the Martha Maiden Award is also now open for nominations. I know that time is a premium, but please consider recognizing yourself, your organization or a peer with these opportunities. These opportunities all close 10/31.
  • ESIP will be very active at the Fall AGU Meeting. We have opened the call for Ignite@AGU talks. Ignite will be Wednesday, December 12, 6-8:30 at Poets and Busboys on 450K. All details are here.
  • 2019 ESIP Winter MeetingRegistration is open and details for session submission is below.

If you would like to include an announcement in a future update, please send me a note.

Have a great week,
Erin

Registration is open & Call for 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting Sessions
Registration is open for the 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting. Details are here

Please submit your session proposals for the 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting. We especially welcome sessions related to our 2019 theme: Increasing the Use and Value of Earth Science Data and Information. Sessions are generally 1.5 hour blocks and can follow a number of different formats. Learn more.

Nominations Open for Martha Maiden Lifetime Achievement Award
This award is named for Martha E. Maiden, NASA Program Executive for Earth Data Systems. Ms. Maiden is widely credited for nurturing the ESIP Federation in its infancy and has overseen its growth and maturity. This award honors individuals who have demonstrated leadership, dedication, and a collaborative spirit in advancing the field of Earth Science information over the lifetime of their career. All details can be found on the website here: https://esipfed.org/get-involved/peer-recoginition/martha-maiden-award. If you have any questions do not hesitate to email me or Christine White, ESIP President, president at esipfed.org.

Nominations Open for ESIP Partner of the Year Award
The Partner of the Year Award is intended to honor an ESIP member organization that exemplifies the spirit of ESIP in one or more areas. This year we are looking for member organizations that have supported ESIP’s 2015 – 2020 Strategic Goal #3 (Promote techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information and applications). Learn more and nominate a member organization.

Nominations Open for 2019 ESIP Leadership Positions
Nominations for 2019 ESIP leadership positions are now OPEN! If you are interested in serving or nominating someone, please email the committee at nominations@esipfed.org. The nominations committee will reach out to those that have been nominated to confirm the nomination and explain next steps in the process. To see positions that are accepting nominations, please see here. Elected leaders receive travel support.

SensorDat Lab Team Invites New Members
“SensorDat” is a new ESIP lab incubator project established to build community around sensors, data quality and real-time data management. With strong collaborations within the ESIP EnviroSensing Cluster, the project was funded for a six month period beginning in the Summer of 2018. As part of the lab project, we would like to work with interested groups to ingest new time-series data streams into an NSF-funded EarthCube tool called CHORDS (“Cloud-Hosted Real-time Data Services for the Geosciences”, see chordsrt.com). Once data are ingested via CHORDS, we will partner with you in exploring methods for improving data quality along with a group of folks facing similar challenges in the management of their sensor data. Many of the data quality algorithms our lab has produced are well underway and our goal is to apply them as early in the data collection phase as possible. Our team is eager to work with others in the collective accomplishment of these goals for the benefit of the ESIP Community. Please contact Mike Daniels, daniels@ucar.edu, for more information.

Around the Federation

NSF Workshop on Conceptualizing a National Geospatial Software Institute
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has funded a project (http://gsi.cigi.illinois.edu) to conceptualize a national Geospatial Software Institute (GSI) as a long-term hub of excellence in software infrastructure for serving diverse research and education communities. To forward the strong momentum gained from two successful workshops, the third workshop will take place in the Washington DC area (January 27-29, 2019). Submit a position paper by October 31st, 2018. If your position paper is selected, you will receive travel support to attend the workshop.

Workshop: The Nexus of Climate Data, Insurance, and Adaptive Capacity (Nov 8-9, 2018)
This workshop, organized by the Statistics and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute, Reinsurance Association of America, RENCI, and Wake Forest University, will facilitate a national, interdisciplinary scientific research discussion on modeling and managing climate change risks between three different but related research communities: the climate modeling and data community, statisticians, and researchers within the insurance and reinsurance industries. This workshop will be aimed at active scientific researchers in each community, with the goals of: sharing perspectives, methods, and databases; defining gaps of existing research; and forming actionable research paths which can only be addressed by teams which are new, collaborative and interdisciplinary. FY19 USGS Community for Data Integration Request for Proposals Released
Core Science Systems and Office of Enterprise Information leadership is excited to announce the FY19 USGS Community for Data Integration (CDI) Request for Proposals.

All interested scientists and staff are urged to consider participating in this opportunity to engage with a dynamic team that spans all mission areas and regions.  With more than 900 members, a major program goal is to support the advancement of USGS science through technical innovation and data integration. This year, we are encouraging proposals that produce building blocks for an Integrated Predictive Science Capacity with the following themes:

  • Producing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data and tools for Integrated Predictive Science Capacity (see the Enabling FAIR Data site)
  • Reusing or repurposing modular tools such as those that were developed by previous CDI projects, including the CDI Risk Map,
  • Building authoritative national datasets for hazards or assets (integrating data and assessing quality),
  • Tools and methods for biosurveillance of emerging invasive species and health threats.

Two-page statements of interest are invited for submission and are due by Friday, November 16, 2018 at 5 pm ET.  See the proposal website for more details, or email cdi@usgs.gov.
