ESIP UPDATE: 10.19.2020

Good Morning ESIP,

First off, the ESIP Team is thrilled to welcome our newest staff member, Patty Allen, as our Operations Director. Patty leads our internal operations including: HR, finance, contracting and event planning. Patty comes to ESIP with a experience in conservation, environmental research, and education organizations. Most recently she was Vice President of Administration at Chesapeake Conservancy and before that she led operations for the Living Oceans Foundation. Patty lives in Annapolis, MD and has a history of bringing efficiency to the organizations where she works and is a great creative problem solver.

We are excited to let you know that registration is now open for the 2021 ESIP Winter Meeting and we continue to welcome session proposals now through the deadline of 11/5.

Did you miss the last Putting Data to Work Webinar featuring Ed Kearns (First Street Foundation) about Quantifying and Communicating Climate Change Risk at the First Street Foundation? You can watch the recording here.

Live this week, you can see ESIP Community Participant Arika Virapongse give an invited presentation at the (free and virtual) ASCENDxSummit: Space Policy and Education. Her presentation will be based on the collaborative paper that she and others authored that was inspired by the 2018 ESIP webinar series, “The Socioeconomic Value of Earth Science Data, Information, and Applications.” Catch Arika's presentation this Wednesday (10/21) at 12:45 pm ET in this session.

Have a wonderful week,
Megan

ESIP Ag & Climate Cluster Webinar: The emerging Semantic Web and Internet of Food: New technologies, opportunities, food supply vulnerabilities, and existential threats to established ag/food hegemonies (10/20 at 3 pm ET)
The ESIP Ag and Climate Cluster (ACC) is hosting a talk by Matthew Lange (Principle Investigator for the International Center for Food Ontology Operability Data and Semantics [IC-FOODS] at the University of California Davis) this Tuesday (10/20) at 3 pm ET.

Over the past year, the ACC's activities have been focused on various science and technology topics that wrap around the transdisciplinary pipeline connecting data to decisions. These topics include ontologies, natural language processing, data needs for near- and long-term land and hazard management, soil morphology, aquatic nutrient pollution, wildfire mitigation, wildfire response, and climate resilience.  Over the fall of 2020 and leading into 2021, we continue this transdisciplinary journey by looking at the role that our community plays in applications related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Matthew's talk is directly relevant to SDG Goal 2 (“Zero Hunger”). Find telecon details at esipfed.org/telecons.

Call for ESIP Leadership Nominations
We are at the time of year when we begin accepting nominations for ESIP leadership positions. There are many different positions that you can be nominated (or nominate yourself) for – see https://wiki.esipfed.org/Nomination_Committee/2021_Nominations_and_Ballot between now and October 31, 2020. Send nominations (self-nomination is encouraged) to nominations@esipfed.org. Multiple nominees for each position are welcome and encouraged. We want to grow the ranks of our leaders and encourage the leadership-curious among you! If you have questions, you can also also write to the Nominations Committee (chaired by Karl Benedict) at nominations@esipfed.org.

Call for Nominations for the 2020 Partner of the Year Award
The ESIP Partner of the Year Award honors an ESIP Partner Organization that exemplifies the spirit of ESIP in one or more areas, through the sharing of a success story. This year, we are looking for partner organizations that have supported the 2020 ESIP theme of Putting Data to Work: Building Public-Private Partnerships to Increase Resilience and Enhance the Socioeconomic Value of Data. We are looking for ESIP partners who have:

  • Been involved in an activity or interacted with ESIP in a manner that has improved the use and value of Earth science data and information, or
  • Helped the Earth science community put data to work, using and reusing data in new and creative applications, creating derived products and showcasing examples of data integration in order to enhance the resilience and enhance the socioeconomic value of data, or
  • Formed or strengthened a public-private partnership that supports the goals above.

This award will be given annually at the Winter Meeting. The partner organization will receive a plaque and two free ESIP meeting registrations for an upcoming meeting. Learn more and nominate an organization here by 10/31.

Putting Data to Work Webinar: Rapid Scaling of Sensitive Information Sharing in Support of National Water Prediction & Hurricane Research (11/12 at 12 pm ET)
Dave Jones, CEO of StormCenter Communications, will present on new efforts they are working on with NOAA for operational implementation of GeoCollaborate, which is StormCenter’s SBIR Phase III, innovative cross-platform real-time data sharing and collaboration environment. The NWS’ National Water Center (NWC) in Tuscaloosa, AL and NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division (HRD) are putting GeoCollaborate to work to improve data and information sharing across agencies, states and scientists to create a unified approach to situational awareness and decision making. This is critical, as so far in 2020 (as of 10/7), there have been 16 weather/climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each to affect the United States. These events included 1 drought event, 11 severe storm events, 3 tropical cyclone events, and 1 wildfire event. Overall, these events resulted in the deaths of 188 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted. The 1980–2019 annual average is 6.6 events (CPI-adjusted); the annual average for the most recent 5 years (2015–2019) is 13.8 events (CPI-adjusted).nGlobally we are experiencing more floods and flash floods remain one of the top killers. As climate changes and CO2 continues to rise, the oceans heat up, hurricanes seem to be intensifying more rapidly, especially near the coastline prior to landfall. Join the webinar to hear more. Find telecon details at esipfed.org/telecons.

USGS CDI Data Visualization Collaboration Area Webinar: Data Sketches: a Year of Exotic Data Visualizations (10/29 at 12 pm ET/9 am PT)
“Data sketches” was a >year-long collaboration between Nadieh Bremer and Shirley Wu, both freelancing data visualization designers. Almost each month they chose a topic and visualized it in an overly elaborate & geeky manner. But besides sharing the end result, they also wrote extensively about the creation process. In this talk, Nadieh will share her most important lessons learned in the fundamental areas of data, sketching & coding. About how some months became favorites, what mistakes were made, and how they were overcome. She'll highlight that many visualizations had humble, ugly duckling beginnings, but that through many (embarrassing) iterations they were turned into unique and, hopefully, compelling results. Learn more and register here. If you're interested in keeping up to date on the CDI Data Visualization Collaboration Area, join their mailing list here.

NCEAS Course on Reproducible Research Techniques for Synthesis (11/15, 11/13, 11/16-11/18, Virtual)
Registration is now open for the five-day “Reproducible Research Techniques for Synthesis” immersion course. The course will enable researchers across career stages and sectors to gain fundamental data science skills in support of open, reproducible research techniques. Major course foci will include managing data to enable better reuse, building reproducible workflows using R and git, and communicating results within the framework of synthesis science. This is an opportunity for students, researchers, data managers, and others to reinforce or expand their learning and become familiar with current best practices and tools in data science and open science.  These skills will enable you to maximize your productivity, share your data effectively, and accelerate the scientific community’s ability to work together on solving important questions about the environment and our interactions with it. Learn more and register here.
