Meeting News
Research as Art Call is OPEN
The Call for Entries is open. You can submit your artwork HERE. Once again at this year’s ESIP Summer Meeting we'll hold a Research as Art event (on the evening of Wednesday, July 26). Our goal is to encourage the ESIP community to use visual media to communicate their data and research; and to think about their research as an ongoing narrative that can be told through visual media. This event is about showing how the ESIP community uses data. You don’t need to consider yourself an artist in order to submit a piece. The idea is to have a range of entries that show the diversity of research done by members of our community, as well as their creativity and the impact of their work, in an engaging and accessible way.

Registration for the ESIP 2017 Summer Meeting is OPEN
Early registration (through June 30, 2017) is $415 for members and $550 for non-members. After June 30, the registration fee rises to $515 for members and $650 for non-members. The student registration fee is $150 (This does not go up). A special one-day rate is available for $200. A full refund will be given until June 30. No refunds will be issued for canceled registration after June 30. Register here.

Registration for the sUAS Data Management Workshop at the Summer Meeting is OPEN
In brief:

  • Free, coffee and snacks supplied (signup here)
  • To talk and build amongst the communities working on developing standards for open science sUAS data (see flyer for presentation hack topic and projects)

New Cluster: Earth Science Pre-Print
First Telecon: June 2, 1:30-2:30 pm ET
We are forming a new ESIP Earth Science Pre-print Cluster to discuss preprint services and address topics such digital publication, indexing taxonomies, citation standards, advertising, and related issues surrounding shared governance and community building. We will begin by examining the Center for Open Science’s preprint service, which is build on top of their popular Open Science Framework. We will also discuss shared governance and how best to engage other societies and interested parties. The first Pre-print Cluster call will be on Friday June 2nd at 1:30pm Eastern time.

Tom Narock is the interim Chair. Telecon schedule is TBD. Hop on the Cluster Slack Channel to find out more and get involved!

Join the PROV Challenge! Don't just think it: share it!
Your idea might change the data world! Do you have a problem with PROV? An idea to make it work better for your data? A notion just on the tip of your hippocampus? Don't just think it: share it! The Community PROV Challenge seeks to explore how community-based provenance and annotation capabilities enhance scientific integrity throughout the data lifecycle. To do this, the USGS has partnered with the ESIP Lab to find creative solutions to PROV challenges.

[JobOpps] Scientific Software Developer
Unidata is looking for a scientific software developer to join our team in creating and maintaining software and data services to support the earth system science community. We are looking for a software developer to help us help our community of scientists bridge the gaps between data servers, desktop scientific visualization packages like the Integrated Data Viewer, and “notebook”-style workflows (think Jupyter notebooks). We'll be integrating existing tools with new technologies to help scientists streamline the process of finding and analyzing data. At the Unidata Program Center, you'll have a chance to work with a great team in-house and an enthusiastic open source community.

For a detailed job description see the official posting.

DataApp Challenge: A Mobile App Framework for Field Data Capture
Award: $30,000 USD
Deadline: July 6, 2017
Challenge hosts: Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Geological Survey

Note: We are looking for both submissions and judges*!

Data collection and capture are fundamental to water and environmental science and management. Scientists, engineers, and technicians are increasingly using mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones to capture data in the field. Numerous apps are available to support general data collection, however existing apps do not provide the functionality and flexibility needed to support the broad range of water and environmental monitoring needs. More importantly, these existing apps do not support the development and sharing of new features and functions by individual users and communities of practice.
