ESIP UPDATE: September 11, 2017

A lot of weather we're having! We hope ESIPers are safe and dry across the SouthEast. And many thanks to ESIPers and others who are getting real-time Earth/weather data to the public!
ESIP is looking for new Student Fellows; ESIP Lab is open for proposals; ESIP will be electing new leaders this fall for next year; ESIP Winter Meeting call for sessions will be open soon (and also registration), and it’s not too early to start thinking about the big ESIP prizes: the Martha Maiden award, and the ESIP/AGU’s Falkenberg Award.

Lots going on in and around ESIP this week! Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.  If you are on Slack, are you using the Slack App? It's a much better GUI. Grab it HERE

Best,
Bruce and the ESIP staff

The ESIP Lab is open for proposals
The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Lab is happy to announce the release of two proposal solicitations: 1) ESIP Lab Incubator Projects and 2) Prototype Community Mediation Service for Provenance and Annotation. Please take the time to review each and contact the Lab via email (lab@esipfed.org) or on Slack (#esip-lab) with any questions. The full RFP is HERE.

Time to apply to become an ESIP Student Fellow!
The Call for 2017 Student Fellows is now OPEN!  Applications will close October 6, 2017, so please get yours in today, or get this link to others you think should apply.

ESIP Member Recognition opportunities: Nominations are open!
The ESIP Partner of the Year
This award is to honor an ESIP member organization that best exemplifies the spirit of ESIP in one or more areas, through the sharing of a success story.
The Martha Maiden Award
This award honors individuals who have demonstrated leadership, dedication and a collaborative spirit in advancing the field of Earth Science information.
The Charles Falkenberg Award
The Falkenberg Award is awarded not more than once annually to an individual “scientist under 45 years of age who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet.”

Earth science preprint endeavor
ESIP's earth science preprint cluster is helping coordinate a community-led pre-print effort in partnership with the Center for Open Science. Tom Narock, the cluster chair, is looking for anyone who wants to step up and help build a small, nimble governance team around this, as the service prepares to open some time this Fall. The cluster is gather ideas for Earth science preprints on the ESIP Ideascale platform. Hop on there and add your ideas or comments on others. Follow EartharXiv on Twitter. And join in the discussions on the #earth-sci-preprint Slack channel.

Late Session on Harvey at the Fall AGU
The late session on Harvey at AGU has eventuated and will be co-organised by Natural Hazards and ESSI (Please note the abstract has data access and assimilation in the session description as well as HPC and Cloud) All abstracts submitted to it will not be subject to the one-author rule so if you already have a paper in AGU in another session you can submit to this one as well. Details as follows:
Submission Deadline: 31 October 2017 23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT.

On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane near Rockport, TX. This slow-moving storm hovered near Victoria, TX, inundating nearby areas from Corpus Christi to Lake Charles, LA, with record rainfall. Harvey's staying power resulted in widespread and catastrophic flooding in multiple areas, leading to discussions about the effectiveness of evacuation protocols, planning and managing impacts of urban flooding, and the use of social media to guide disaster rescue efforts, particularly in large urban centers.

OGC seeks public comment on proposed Geocoding API Standards Working Group
Contact: info@opengeospatial.org 5 September 2017: The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) is requesting comments on the draft charter for an OGC Geocoding API Standards Working Group (SWG). Geocoding is the act of linking a text and/or numerical string to a location on Earth. Typically, a user searches for an address or a point of interest on a map, which necessitates the geocoding of the user input and return of a position on a map. Such functionality is commonly enabled via geocoding APIs and web services. The draft charter of the Geocoding SWG is available at: portal.opengeospatial.org/files/75003. Comments should be sent via email to charter-requests@opengeospatial.org and are due by 26 September 2017. The OGC and the SWG welcome comments from all interested parties.
