ESIP UPDATE: 02.18.2019

Good Morning ESIP,

In this week's update, we share a tribute to long-time ESIP participant Bruce Barkstrom. Among the many reflections on Bruce, his colleagues called Bruce a remarkable scholar and noted that, “he loved to play with new, out-of-the-box ideas, but even more, he loved collaborating with others in developing his ideas.”

We also share a Member Highlight on the Science Gateways Community Institute and announce that the Call for Application for the 2019 Raskin Scholarship is now out. We also remind you to share ideas for ESIP's application to be a mentoring organization for the Google Summer of Code and remind you that you can still find out what happened at the 2019 ESIP Winter Meeting (e.g., view the recent Winter Meeting Highlights Webinar).

Of course, we hope you can join us on one (or more) of the collaboration area telecons happening this week!

Do you have news to share in the Monday Update? If so, send it to megancarter@esipfed.org.

Best,
Megan

Megan Carter Orlando
ESIP Community Director

  This Week's Collaboration Area Telecons:

  • Tuesday: Governance, CLEAN Network
  • Wednesday: Community Resilience
  • Thursday: Citation Guidelines, Education, Drones

ESIP News

Colleagues Honor Long-Time ESIP Participant Bruce Barkstrom
In an EOS article published last week, colleagues remember Dr. Bruce Barkstrom, who passed away in July 2018. As a “principal investigator for NASA missions involved with understanding Earth’s radiation budget, Bruce committed his life to analyzing, interpreting, and stewarding Earth science data.” Read the full article here.

ESIP Member Highlight: Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI)
SGCI is funded by the NSF to offer—at no cost—resources, services, experts, and ideas for creating and sustaining science gateways. SGCI helps project teams build better, faster, economical, and sustainable digital projects that make science happen. One of their most popular offerings is a week-long intensive Bootcamp that covers topics from budgeting and marketing to cybersecurity and usability. Learn more about SGCI and why they participate in ESIP here.

2019 Raskin Scholarship Call for Applications
The Raskin Scholarship seeks to promote collaboration, research support, and exposure for talented students in the Earth or computer sciences. The Scholarship, which is awarded annually, provides a $5000 award and travel support to the ESIP Summer Meeting, where the recipient will have an invited talk covering their field of interest. The Scholarship is named in honor of long-time ESIP participant, Rob Raskin, who was an Earth science information partner extraordinaire and a mentor to many aspiring Earth science data professionals. For more details on eligibility and how to apply, please visit our website.
