ESIP@AGU20
We have been delighted to see the work of ESIP participants displayed in numerous places at the AGU20 Fall Meeting. If you're at AGU, here are a few presentations and sessions to check out. This is by no means an exhaustive list, so if you'd like the community to know about your ESIP-related AGU activity, feel free to send a note by 12/17 to megancarter@esipfed.org and we will mention it in next week's Monday Update. Thank you all for your hard work!
ESIP Lab 2020 Winter Request for Proposals (due 1/29)
The ESIP Lab supports the Earth science community in building innovative, applied technologies through funding and community input. Additionally, projects are encouraged to have a learning objective as part of their deliverables. Through this Request for Proposals (RFP), the ESIP Lab seeks projects that last 6 – 8 months, with a maximum budget of $10,000. Learn more about esipfed.org/rfp.
ESIP Welcomes 2021 ESIP Community Fellows
The call for 2021 ESIP Community Fellows attracted a number of very impressive applicants. Ultimately, we select 8 Fellows. Like past Fellows, the 2021 Fellows provide support for and participate in various ESIP collaboration areas. Learn more about them HERE and make sure to say hello to them at the 2021 ESIP Meetings!

EarthCube seeking community input for new FAIR data training materials
Building on the EarthCube (EC) Leadership Council to promote the FAIR Data and Resources for the Geoscience Community, an initiative has been started to develop tutorials and informational briefings to increase awareness and facilitate activities to improve the FAIRness of EarthCube-related data, tools, and services. The FAIR Principles offer guidelines for improving the value of research data by making it more “Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.” The EarthCube Office seeks your help to identify priorities for creating new resources to support implementation of the FAIR data principles. We invite you to contribute through this *very* short survey: Topics for FAIR Data Training Resources. Please feel free to contact Melissa Cragin mcragin@sdsc.edu and/or Nancy Hoebelheinrich nhoebel@kmotifs.com if you have any questions or would be interested to have a conversation about this effort or the FAIR Principles.
Help Inform Future Data Management Education for Science Data (10 min. survey)
From (Bradley Wade Bishop, Assoc. Professor at University of Tennessee): You are being invited to take part in a study on science data management because you are a critical agent as data management is part of your work. Your participation is completely voluntary and responses will be kept confidential. The research is being conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee. I know your time is valuable, but by taking around 10 minutes to participate in this study, you will inform future data management education for science data. An increased understanding of jobs that contain data management should improve access and use of data to benefit all of society. Follow the link for more information: Job Analyses for Science Data Managers.
You will be asked to describe your job tasks and background. Your responses will be anonymous and linked by a unique identifier for any analysis; however, all findings will be reported in the aggregate. I greatly appreciate your contribution to the study. If you have questions at any time about the study or you experience problems, you may contact Bradley Wade Bishop wade.bishop@utk.edu or 865-974-2775 (office). If you have any questions or concerns regarding your rights as a subject in this study, you may also contact the Office of Research Compliance Officer at (865) 974-7697.
The Virtual Data Help Desk, which is sponsored by EarthCube and further supported by AGU and the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), provides researchers with opportunities to engage with informatics experts familiar with their scientific domain to learn about skills and techniques that will help further their research and make their data and software open and FAIR. The Virtual Data Help Desk will be staffed with experts from the Earth science informatics community to answer data-related questions and to demo useful resources.
