ESIP UPDATE: December 5, 2016

Good morning all –
There are some upcoming Winter Meeting dates you might want to take some action on, particularly if you want to do a poster or a demo.
We are looking forward to seeing a lot of you at the AGU. Plan for mid 50s and some showers. You can stop by the booth or catch us at the town halls. If you want to do a demo at the booth let me know.

We are happy to announce the arrival of a new generation of ESIPer: Woodrow “Woody” Bryant Burgess was Born Nov. 29th at 8pm and weighing in at 9 lbs, 21 inches long. Mom and Dad are doing well. Annie B will be on leave until March. If Woody had been born a day earlier, staff was hoping he'd be called “Monday Update Burgess.” Woody is already a lucky little dude!

Ignite@AGU will be great fun.  Join us for an evening of lightning talks!

Remember, if there is anything you'd like to see included in next week's Monday Update, send it to Bruce Caron (brucecaron AT esipfed.org).

Best,
Bruce

GeoSemantics Symposium, Tuesday, January 10, ESIP Winter Meeting Hotel
The ESIP Semantic Technologies Committee (STC) is hosting a GeoSemantics Symposium which will be taking place on Tuesday January 10th, 2017 in the Middlebrook Room, Bethesda North Marriott, Bethesda, MD. You will notice that this is co-located one day prior to the ESIP Winter meeting so we hope that people can make it and provide input into what is shaping up to be an exciting day connecting several communities.
With the renewed interest in the Semantic Sensor Network Ontology primarily driven by the W3C Spatial Data on the Web (SDW) working group and the current interest in drone technologies and their application to the Earth Sciences, we hope that both Drone and Semantic Technologies communities @ESIP can connect at the GeoSemantics Symposium.
At this stage the STC is looking to:

  1. Gauge individual/group interest in the event. If you are interested in attending, please register your interest. We will be hosting the meeting remotely as well so please register your interest even if you cannot make it in person as we will accommodate that.
  2. Interested to hear from people who would like to demo software/hardware relating to the topic of GeoSemantics.
  3. Interested to hear from ongoing/past/future Testbed projects which do/could relate to the topic of GeoSemantics.
  4. Interested to hear general comments about what you would appreciate from an agenda on this topic. Please send your comments to the chairs of the STC.

RDA Ninth Plenary in Barcelona
The 9th RDA Plenary Meeting will take place from 5th to 7th April 2017 at the Barcelo Sants Hotel, Barcelona, Spain. The plenary meeting is organised by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) with the support of RDA Europe.  Here is the Call for Plenary Sessions.

New Paper on Data Stewardship Maturity
A new paper on a case study of using the data stewardship maturity matrix (DSMM) to a well-utilized, high-impact NOAA/NCEI dataset – GHCN-Monthly, has been published by D-Lib Magazine in its Nov/Dec 2016 issue (http://www.dlib.org/dlib/november16/peng/11peng.html). The results from the use case study show that an application of DSMM is useful to people who produce or care for digital environmental datasets. Assessments can identify the strengths and weaknesses of an individual dataset or organization's preservation and stewardship practices, including how information about the dataset is integrated into different systems. This effort has been led by several ESIP/DSC (Data Stewardship Committee) participates with collaboration with NCEI (National Centers for Environmental Information).
