ESIP UPDATE: July 24, 2017

Happy Summer Meeting Monday ESIPers –
Look out BTown, ESIP is here! There's ESIP Bowling tonight (sign up on Sched: SPACE IS LIMITED).  ESIP is collecting member stories: not the “one time at band camp” variety, but stories about how being a member of ESIP has helped your research and life. Also feedback on what you like (or not) about ESIP. Read below to learn how you can tell a story and WIN A DRONE!
…oh… and we will also like your “one time at ESIP Summer Meeting anecdotes too!”  I remember when Frank… well, maybe I won't tell that one….

ESIP summer meeting is where you find new colleagues and reconnect with old ones.

Travel well!

Lots going on in and around ESIP this week! Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.  If you are on Slack, are you using the Slack App? It's a much better GUI. Grab it HERE

Best,
Bruce and the ESIP staff

Do you like robots? Do you like flying robots? Do you like open earth science data? Do you like flying robots that collect earth science data to help solve important global challenges? Then please join us in Bloomington, IN for a 1 day drone data Workshop & Hackathon on July 24, 2017. The morning workshop includes short presentations by earth and information scientists from NASA, USGS, DJI, USDA, OGC and others involved in the area of science drones (AKA small unmanned aerial systems AKA sUAS AKA flying data robots). After lunch, speakers and participants will come together for a hackathon, working on projects ranging from prototyping data formating tools, through brainstorming best practices for data management, workflow design, or [your idea here].

Tell your ESIP Story for a chance to win a drone!
Why do you participate in ESP?  What is an interesting project that you’ve done with your ESIP colleagues?  Is there a learning experience from your ESIP involvement that you’d like to share?
For every collaboration decision, new idea pursued, interoperable connection, and lesson-learned that we know about, there are many more that have not been shared. From now until the Summer Meeting you are invited to document an ESIP story or experience through the #myesipstory Slack channel. On Thursday at the Meeting ESIP will be collecting video stories (these also count for the contest). Not only will this help others hear about your work, but you’ll also be entered into a raffle to win a DJI Drone, and another contest for the best story to win another DJI drone! Start thinking of your ESIP stories now!
FULL CONTEST RULES are here on the ESIP Website
For these contests staff will be collecting ESIP stories from today through the COB on Thursday, July 27, 2017. Everyone who provides a story will be eligible for one (or both) drones. DJI has generously donated two Phantom 3 drones for this effort!
If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.  If you are on Slack, are you using the Slack App? It's a much better GUI. Grab it HERE.

New paper published: Ensuring and Improving Information Quality for Earth Science Data and Products
Hampapuram Ramapriyan, Ge Peng, David Moroni, Chung-Lin Shie
ESIP Information Quality Cluster
Information about quality is always of concern to users, whether they are buying a car or some other consumer goods, or using scientific data for research or an application. To facilitate consistent quality evaluation and description of quality information on data products for the Earth Science community, we formally introduce and define four constituents of information quality — scientific, product, stewardship and service. CODATA 2017: Submission and Early Bird Registration Deadline Extended to 28 July
Following a very large number of requests from those organising sessions and planning to submit papers to CODATA 2017 ‘Global Challenges and Data-Driven Science’, 8-13 October 2017, Saint-Petersburg, Russia, the conference organisers have agreed to extend the deadline for submissions to 28 July.  In line with this, the deadline for ‘early-bird’ registration has been also extended to 28 July 2017.

EPA’s Smart City Air Webinar Challenge Series – big data in communities!
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting a series of webinars to help communities design effective air quality projects. The webinars will keep up the momentum of the Smart City Air Challenge, which encourages communities to deploy hundreds of air quality sensors and make the resulting data open. Local governments partnered with sensor manufacturers, data management companies, and others to create strategies for collecting and using the data. EPA awarded $40,000 each to two communities: Baltimore, Maryland, and Lafayette, Louisiana. The awards were based on their strategies, including their plans to share their data management methods so others can benefit.

The next webinar in this series will take place on July 18, 2017, at 12 p.m., ET. Tune in as the winners of the Smart City Air Challenge talk about their efforts to deploy air quality sensors in their communities. The agenda includes topics such as progress, challenges, community engagement, data management, and next steps. Please  circulate this announcement to others who might be interested.

Register for the webinar today.
