A few notes about what is happening around the ESIP Lab. We're once again working with NASA AIST on technology evaluations that expose developing technology to potential end-users, and other experts, to identify infusion opportunities/roadblocks. This work relates nicely to our participation in this year's ESDS Communication Methods in Technology Infusion (CMITI) working group. It's exciting to be working with NASA on tech infusion in these different, but remarkably complementary projects.
Last week I had the chance to do some fieldwork with a budding geoscientist. She was using UAVs and Structure from Motion to map snowpack distribution in complex mountain terrain. She told me she switched to an earth science major after getting hooked by UAVs and GIS. Spending time with her reminded me of the curiosity and excitement needed for discovery and how programs that nurture an interest in technology AND domain science can engage a broader range of students!
As such, a reminder that the deadline for the 2021 Raskin Scholarship is next week. We welcome applications from students and early career researchers in the earth or computer sciences. Thank you for your help in sharing the call for applications.
Have a wonderful week,
Annie Burgess ESIP Lab Director
ps. In case you didn't see it, I wanted to share a recent piece in Science titled, Fleets of radar satellites are measuring movements on Earth like never before. In particular, the piece stated that “like modern GPS, reliable SAR and InSAR data will support myriad applications, many of which have yet to be imagined. ‘Nobody thought of your Uber and pizza delivery when they thought of GPS.'” I see this as a charge to continue and expand the critical work of data professionals and mentor the next generation who have been given this charge!

Webinar Highlight: Earth Data Extraction, Exploration and Visualization Using the AppEARS Platform. Tom Maiersperger & Chris Torbert will provide an overview of the Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS). which is a data subsetter that provides data access and data value exploration for a variety of data from federal archives.
Call for Robert G. Raskin Scholarship Applications (due 3/15)
The Raskin Scholarship seeks to promote collaboration, research support, and exposure for talented students and early career researchers in the Earth or computer sciences. The Scholarship, which is awarded annually, provides a $5000 award and support to attend the ESIP Summer Meeting, where the recipient will have an invited talk covering their field of interest. The award is named in honor of long-time ESIP participant, Rob Raskin, who was an Earth science information partner extraordinaire and a mentor to many aspiring Earth science data professionals. For more details on eligibility and how to apply, please visit our website.
Call for Charles S. Falkenberg Nominations (due 4/15)
The Charles S. Falkenberg Award is an annual award sponsored by AGU and ESIP to recognize an early to mid-career scientist who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet. Learn more about the award, past recipients, and the nomination process here.
