ESIP UPDATE: November 7, 2016

Good morning all –

ESIP Executive Director Erin Robinson and ESIP President Emily Law are in St. Petersburg, Russia this week for the GEO-XIII Plenary. Utilizing this international forum, Erin and Emily will be building ESIP's reputation by sharing our accomplishments as they relate to GEO. Additionally, they hope to gain new connections to help further ESIP's work, particularly around strengthening ties between observation and user communities.

Remember, if there is anything you'd like to see included in next week's Monday Update, send it to Bruce Caron (brucecaron AT esipfed.org).

Best,
Annie B (Bruce is on travel until Nov 9).

IT&I Tech Dive: Introducing 3D Tiles
Summary: 3D Tiles are an open specification for streaming massive heterogeneous 3D geospatial datasets. To expand on Cesium’s terrain and imagery streaming, 3D Tiles will be used to stream 3D content, including buildings, trees, point clouds, and vector data.

Speaker(s): Todd Smith is the Cesium Product Manager, and helps define and manage the Cesium product line. Todd has been with the AGI team from the beginning and has been in the web mapping world for over 15 years. He is a Penn State GIS graduate. Matt Amato is a Senior Software Architect and founding member of Cesium. He is also the godfather of CZML, a JSON schema for describing dynamic scenes in virtual globes & maps. He currently leads the development of the Cesium content server, which will make it easy for users to upload raw terrain, models, and vector data and interactively create customized mapping applications via the 3D Tiles specification. He is a graduate of Drexel University’s college of engineering with a BS in Computer Science and has been at AGI for over 15 years.

Time: Thursday, November 10, 2016, (3:00pm ET | 2:00pm CT | 1:00pm MT | 12:00am PT)

Call for 2016 Ignite@AGU speakers
The popular science storytelling event Ignite@AGU is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14, 2015 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at Infusion Lounge. We’re looking for enthusiastic presenters who are excited to share their work in a fast-paced, non-traditional session. Each presenter has five minutes and 20 auto-advancing slides to discuss a science topic of their choice. If you’d like to give an Ignite talk, submit your talk proposal by November 14th.

Data Management Training Clearinghouse is LIVE!
The Data Management Training (DMT) Clearinghouse is now live on ESIP’s Common’s site at:  http://dmtclearinghouse.esipfed.org – come check it out!  All the functionality is available to the public including the Search, Browse, and documentation pages (Help and About).  At this point, submission of content to the inventory of data management training resources is available to those with an ESIP account, but those who do not have such an account can register to get one, and then submit information about resources upon login.   We are anticipating that this crowdsourcing mechanism will help us grow and sustain the inventory of resources in the DMT Clearinghouse.  So, please try the site, submit content, send feedback, pass on the word to your friends and colleagues, and suggest other resources that could be added.  In the near future, we will also be soliciting (volunteer) reviewers and editors for the submitted information as well, so let us know if you’re interested either to Nancy Hoebelheinrich,  nhoebel@kmotifs.com or to clearinghouseEd@esipfed.org

Location Powers: Big Data Webinar
The rapid increase of sensing and mobile devices is an unstoppable information source that is transforming human lives in incredible ways. Every two days the human race is now generating as much data as was generated from the dawn of humanity through the year 2003. Big Data is driven by the real time collection, analyses, and visualization of vast amounts of the information most of which has a geospatial or location component. The data was measured somewhere or it describes events at some location. Processing this enormous and varied stream of geospatial information with new big data techniques will bring new benefits to many applications in our world.

On Tuesday 20th September the world's leaders in big geospatial data systems came together to not only to hear the latest developments but contributed to the collective discussion advancing the use of big data computing techniques applied to geospatial data with results in many applications. We are holding a public webinar on Tuesday 22 November at 1800 GMT to share the next steps for the Big Data Whitepaper and outcomes of the Big Data Summit. If you wish to attend the webinar please register here.

JobOpps: Research and Policy Director
The Kauffman Foundation is looking to hire a Research and Policy Director to head up a program of academic research on entrepreneurship. Reporting to the Vice President of Entrepreneurship, the Research & Policy Director will lead the design and implementation of the Foundation’s research and policy strategy. RDA Matrix of Use Cases and Functional Requirements for Research Data Repository Platforms
The Repository Platforms for Research Data (RPRD) Interest Group (IG) of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) has completed the Matrix of Use Cases and Functional Requirements for Research Data Repository Platforms. The matrix contains functional requirements scores that can be used to assess research data repository platforms and to prioritize functional requirements for development and adoption. Please find the matrix at http://tinyurl.com/RPRD-matrix.

On behalf of the RPRD IG co-chairs:
