ESIP UPDATE: June 26, 2017

Happy Monday ESIPers –
Erin and I are back from a fantastic trip to Asheville, which included a climate and energy forum at The Collider and a visit to NCEI! Speaking of NCEI, as we approach the summer meeting, its time to check out their monthly climate normals for Bloomington. Data says… its going to be warm!

Lots going on in and around ESIP this week! Keep up on all the action on Slack! If you are not already on the ESIP Slack team: here is your INVITATION.  If you are on Slack, are you using the Slack App? It's a much better GUI. Grab it HERE

Best,
Annie and the ESIP staff

Meeting News
Research as Art Call Deadline: *Sunday, July 2nd*
The Call for Entries is open. You can submit your artwork HERE. Once again at this year’s ESIP Summer Meeting we'll hold a Research as Art event (on the evening of Wednesday, July 26). Our goal is to encourage the ESIP community to use visual media to communicate their data and research; and to think about their research as an ongoing narrative that can be told through visual media. This event is about showing how the ESIP community uses data. You don’t need to consider yourself an artist in order to submit a piece. The idea is to have a range of entries that show the diversity of research done by members of our community, as well as their creativity and the impact of their work, in an engaging and accessible way.

Early Registration Deadline: *FRIDAY, June 30th*
Early registration (through June 30, 2017) is $415 for members and $550 for non-members. After June 30, the registration fee rises to $515 for members and $650 for non-members. The student registration fee is $150 (This does not go up). A special one-day rate is available for $200. A full refund will be given until June 30. No refunds will be issued for canceled registration after June 30. Register here.

Hotel Information: Hilton is FULL, Try Hyatt and SpringHill
A few small blocks of rooms have been held at a group rate of $104, within GSA per diem rates for Bloomington. The blocks will be held until July 7, 2017 or they are filled, whichever comes first.

Register for the Science Communication Workshop at the Summer Meeting
Kasey White, of the Geological Society of America, will lead a workshop titled “Be interesting and be heard: Communicating your science to policy makers.” To be most effective, participation will be limited to 20 individuals. Please sign up here. More info on the workshop can be found on Sched: http://sched.co/As8N

Register for the ESIP Drone Workshop: Monday, July 24
Do you like robots? Do you like flying robots? Do you like open earth science data? Do you like flying robots that collect earth science data to help solve important global challenges? Then please join us in Bloomington, IN for a 1 day drone data Workshop & Hackathon on July 24, 2017. The morning workshop includes short presentations by earth and information scientists from NASA, USGS, DJI, USDA, OGC and others involved in the area of science drones (AKA small unmanned aerial systems AKA sUAS AKA flying data robots). After lunch, speakers and participants will come together for a hackathon, working on projects ranging from prototyping data formating tools, through brainstorming best practices for data management, workflow design, or [your idea here].

Attendance is FREE (though please sign up HERE by June 30th) and food will be provided! Contact workshop organizers Jane Wyngaard and Lindsay Barbieri for more information at [jwyngaar@nd.edu, lkbar@uvm.edu].

Call for Subject Matter Experts to Join the Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) Governance Panel:

In recent months the ESIP Semantic Technologies Committee has been hard at work transitioning the Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) suite of ontologies over to their new home at ESIP. SWEET provides an upper-level ontology for knowledge representation across Earth System Science. SWEET is highly modular with ~6000 concepts in ~200 separate ontologies, meaning that it covers a wide variety of domains.

The Semantic Technologies Committee is extending an open invitation to ALL interested parties with a special emphasis on Subject Matter Experts from across the following disciplines
Integrative Topics

  • Natural Phenomena (Macroscale e.g. ecological, physical)
  • Human Activity (commerce, decisions, environment, jurisdiction, research)
  • Data (provenance, formats, modeling, products, services, analysis, geospatial, reduction, validation, processing)

Faceted Topics

  • Living Substances
  • Non-Living Substances
  • Physical Processes (microscale)
  • Earth Realm
  • Physical Properties (observation)
  • Space
  • Time
  • Units
  • Numerics

For more information, go to the GitHub page, or email Lewis McGibbney.

Register Now for the 2017 DataONE Users Group Meeting
Please be reminded that registration for the 2017 DataONE Users Group (DUG) meeting is currently open.  The meeting will be held July 24th – 25th 2017 and is co-located with the Summer ESIP Federation Meeting at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. The DataONE Users Group (DUG) meeting will be a 2-day event featuring plenary presentations, topical breakout sessions, and community-led discussions.

There is no registration fee to attend and participate in the DUG meeting
Information, registration and group hotel rates can be found at: bit.ly/DUG2017

LP-DAAC Land Data Forum
The LP DAAC User Services team has implemented a searchable user forum as a way to facilitate discussion among the land remote sensing user community. The LP DAAC invites you to use this forum to discuss your research, ask questions, and participate in discussions on remotely sensed land data products and their applications.

The forum is readily accessible to the public. The LP DAAC expects the visibility of these “science conversations/discussion topics” in the forum to help build a persistent knowledge base that will benefit the land remote sensing user community.

To participate in the forum, please visit https://wiki.earthdata.nasa.gov/display/forums/Land+Data+Forum

Understanding the Changing Arctic through Data: Stewardship, Publication, and Science
Fifth International Symposium on Arctic Research (ISAR-5), 15-18 January 2018, Tokyo, Japan (further information below and at https://jcar.org/isar-5/)

In recent years, there has been much attention paid to data and the many ways that we collect, store, manage, transform and use data. The Internet, mobile computing, and increases in computing power and storage capacities, are presenting new opportunities for supporting research and sharing knowledge. At the same time, many challenges remain in the areas of data management and use of new technology, such as securing interoperability, disclosure of data, big data treatment, data rescue, etc. In this session we call for papers that share ideas, experiences, and results related to data.

Calls for Abstracts and Registration for ISAR-5 are now open at https://jcar.org/isar-5/

WDS Network of Early Career Researchers and Young Scientists

Calling all Early Career Researchers and Young Scientists
The World Data System (WDS) is a body of the International Council for Science (ICSU) that helps to coordinate and supports research data centres and date services worldwide. Our activities span all disciplines, and are designed to ensure that research data are preserved and openly disseminated to safeguard the integrity of science. WDS is also concerned with the availability to scientists and policymakers of the critical information necessary to manage Earth’s resources wisely.

WDS recognizes the important role of Early Career Researchers in developing and promoting best practice in data management and data sharing through its annual Data Stewardship Award. We have now started to create a WDS Network of Early Career Researchers and Young Scientists (collectively ECRs), and we are looking for enthusiastic and brilliant individuals to take this even further by helping foster better communication among ECRs, and to design activities targeting their interests and concerns.

If you are a data scientist or a scientist who collects and uses large data resources then this Network is specifically for you. Moreover, if you are interested in becoming involved in WDS endeavours and would like to contribute to the development of ‘next-generation’ data practices, then please contact the WDS International Programme Office to find out more about joining the WDS ECR Network.
