ESIP UPDATE: 11.05.18

Hello ESIP Community,

Happy November! There is a lot to look forward to in and around ESIP these days.

The Data FAIR at AGU will be an exciting opportunity for you to share or learn skills and techniques to make your data and software open and FAIR. There will be Town Halls, Workshops, and a Data Help Desk, where you can sign up to answer data-related questions or demo a tool or platform.

Also at AGU in December, you have the chance to attend and even give a talk at Ignite@AGU 2018.

Of course another fast-approaching and exciting event is the ESIP Winter Meeting. Don't miss your chance to submit a session proposal!

ESIP Staff, along with a number of other groups, are attending a Science Gateways Community Institute Bootcamp this week. We look forward to telling you more about it in a future update!

Join the 5th Socioeconomic Value of Earth Observations Webinar: Managing disasters through improved data-driven decision-making
Date: Thursday November 15th, 2018
Time: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET
Location: GoToMeeting

Weather-related events have reached historic levels. In 2017 alone, U.S. weather and climate disasters caused a record-breaking $306 billion in damages. Supply chains were disrupted, business was halted, repair and overtime costs skyrocketed, and communities lost power. Lives were lost. The development of an ORL (Operational Readiness Level) for datasets seeks to classify operational decision support information to increase decision makers’ confidence in the datasets and tools used in their decision processes. Data and information must be accessed and shared across multiple devices, platforms, and sectors (public and private) to help industries and communities coordinate response operations. The result is faster recovery and reduced disaster costs. This webinar focuses on the success of information sharing partnerships, trust frameworks, and delivery of reliable, timely, and actionable information to the right people at the right time.

Presenters
Karen Moe, NASA emeritus
Tom Moran, Executive Director, All Hazards Consortium
Dave Jones, CEO, StormCenter
Kari Hicks, Duke Energy Corporation
Maggi Glasscoe, JPL NASA

Data FAIR at AGU Fall Meeting
The Data FAIR at AGU Fall Meeting provides researchers with opportunities to engage with informatics experts familiar with their scientific domain and learn about skills and techniques that will help further your research and make your data and software open and FAIR. The Data FAIR activities include Town Halls, Workshops at the AGU Booth, and a Data Reference Desk hosted by the ESIP and staffed with experts from the Earth and space science informatics community to answer your data questions and demo tools and platforms. Learn more and view the full schedule here. Better yet, sign up for a time slot at the Data Help Desk to answer data-related questions or to demo your tool or platform! Contact megancarter@esipfed.org with questions.

Ignite at AGU Fall Meeting
ESIP and NASA's Applied Sciences Program are thrilled to co-sponsor Ignite@AGU 2018. This event will feature a number of quick presentations with auto-advancing slides and encourages presenters to “Enlighten us, but make it quick!” The event will include free appetizers and a cash bar. Learn more, watch last year's talks, and submit a talk (by 11/18) here.

Workshop: The Nexus of Climate Data, Insurance, and Adaptive Capacity (Nov 8-9, 2018)
This workshop, organized by the Statistics and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute, Reinsurance Association of America, RENCI, and Wake Forest University, will facilitate a national, interdisciplinary scientific research discussion on modeling and managing climate change risks between three different but related research communities: the climate modeling and data community, statisticians, and researchers within the insurance and reinsurance industries. This workshop will be aimed at active scientific researchers in each community, with the goals of: sharing perspectives, methods, and databases; defining gaps of existing research; and forming actionable research paths which can only be addressed by teams which are new, collaborative and interdisciplinary. FY19 USGS Community for Data Integration Request for Proposals Released
Core Science Systems and Office of Enterprise Information leadership is excited to announce the FY19 USGS Community for Data Integration (CDI) Request for Proposals.

All interested scientists and staff are urged to consider participating in this opportunity to engage with a dynamic team that spans all mission areas and regions.  With more than 900 members, a major program goal is to support the advancement of USGS science through technical innovation and data integration. This year, we are encouraging proposals that produce building blocks for an Integrated Predictive Science Capacity with the following themes:

  • Producing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data and tools for Integrated Predictive Science Capacity (see the Enabling FAIR Data site)
  • Reusing or repurposing modular tools such as those that were developed by previous CDI projects, including the CDI Risk Map,
  • Building authoritative national datasets for hazards or assets (integrating data and assessing quality),
  • Tools and methods for biosurveillance of emerging invasive species and health threats.

Two-page statements of interest are invited for submission and are due by Friday, November 16, 2018 at 5 pm ET.  See the proposal website for more details, or email cdi@usgs.gov.
