ESIP UPDATE: December 12, 2016

Good morning all – Hello AGU! You can stop by the ESIP booth (#247) or catch us at the town halls.

Exciting news on the ESIP governance front. The ESIP Federation and the ESIP Foundation are merging into a single, nimble, member organization: ESIP. The new ESIP: same mission, same people, same goals, streamlined for better governance. This is a great start for the next decades of making data matter!

Ignite@AGU2016 will be great fun.  Join us Wednesday Evening at the Infusion Lounge for an evening of lightning talks!

Remember, if there is anything you'd like to see included in next week's Monday Update, send it to Bruce Caron (brucecaron AT esipfed.org).

Best,

Federation News
ESIP Federation/Foundation Merger
With a vote from the Foundation Board and the ESIP Federation Assembly the Federation and Foundation will merge into a new membership organization: ESIP. Assembly leadership elections will also directly elect ESIP Board Directors.
ESIP's Mission remains the same:
ESIP’s mission is to support the networking and data dissemination needs of our members and the global community by linking the functional sectors of observation, research, application, education, and ultimate use of Earth science. Previous strategic plans reflected the evolving nature of ESIP. To accomplish that mission, the ESIP strategic plan vision for 2015-2020 is to be a leader in promoting the collection, stewardship, and use of Earth science data, information, and knowledge that is responsive to societal needs. …

To achieve ESIP’s mission, the 2015-2020 strategic plan identifies four primary goals:

  • Increase the use and value of Earth science data and information.
  • Strengthen the ties between observations and user communities (e.g. technologies, research, education and applications).
  • Promote techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information, and applications.
  • Position ESIP to play a major role in Earth science issues (e.g. addressing effects of climate change mitigation, adaptation and supporting sustainable science data infrastructure).
