ESIP UPDATE: 02.26.18

Good morning –

As you may know, this year, 2018, marks ESIP's 20th year! The official date of the first meeting was May 5-7, 1998, so the Summer ESIP Meeting will be both forward looking to the next 20 years and looking back at where we have come from. With that in mind, the call for sessions and workshops is open. Sessions are due April 30, 2018. Hotel information and meeting registration will be shared in early March.

Visioneers is the creative engine behind our meetings. They brought us Research as Art, ESIP Ambassadors and FUNding Friday. They will be focusing their next call on Wednesday, March 7 at 3pm ET, towards brainstorming on 20th anniversary ideas for the Summer Meeting. Please join us, if you are able. Details are on the telecon calendar

There are many ESIP-relevant activities happening at the upcoming RDA Plenary in Berlin, Germany. If you would like your session or activity shared, will you reply to this note and we will compile a special ESIP preview.

Best,
Erin & the ESIP Staff

Call for Sessions at 2018 ESIP Summer Meeting
We are now accepting sessions for the 2018 ESIP Summer Meeting. Sessions should be submitted through this form by April 30, 2018. All details for the meeting are being added directly to Sched, here. The theme of the year is “Data for our Changing Earth: Realizing the Socioeconomic Value of Data.” Sessions that support the theme are encouraged.

ESIP + Google Summer of Code
Annie Burgess wrote a blog post last week detailing our involvement in the Google Summer of Code and how you can participate.  Project ideas are being submitted here ASAP (13 days left) and students are vetting projects now!

Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. Students work with an open source organization on a 3 month programming project during their break from school.

Raskin Scholarship – Applications due 4/2/18
The call for 2018 Raskin Scholarship for students or early-career scientists is open through April 2, 2018. As many of you know, in March 2012, the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) and Earth science community at-large, lost long-time member, Rob Raskin. Rob was soft-spoken, easy-going, wise and an Earth science information partner extraordinaire. Rob was a mentor to many aspiring Earth science data professionals. When he passed away, his family endowed a scholarship for early career scientist in his honor. The scholarship prize is $5000 + travel to the ESIP Summer Meeting and the recipient will present during the plenary.  For more details on eligibility and how to apply, please visit our website

DataONE Summer Internship Opportunities
DataONE is excited to announce four great internship opportunities as part of our annual dataONE Summer Internship Program.

  • Sharing Reproducible Research through DataONE and WholeTale
  • Supporting Synthesis Science with DataONE
  • Communications & Outreach: Development of a Primer for Early-Career Researchers
  • Extending Libmagic for Identification of Science Resources

Undergraduates, graduates and recent postgraduates are invited to apply to work with DataONE for nine weeks between May and July 2018. NSF Cyber Carpentry Workshop: Data Lifecycle Training
The NSF Cyber Carpentry Workshop: Data Lifecycle Training is a two-week summer workshop aimed at helping graduate students understand the many aspects of the data-intensive computing environment. Even more important, the workshop will focus on bridging the gap between domain scientists and computer and information scientists so that data-intensive research is quicker, less complicated, and more productive.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the workshop will take place July 16 – 27, 2018 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Travel and accommodations will be provided for participants, and a certificate of completion from UNC’s School of Information and Library Science will be awarded upon successful completion of the workshop.

AGU Honors Reminder – Deadline 3/15
The call for AGU awards is out and there are a few of note.

ESIP co-sponsors the Charles S. Falkenberg Award, given in honor of Charles Falkenberg who died tragically early in 9/11. The Falkenberg Award is given annually to one honoree in “recognition of an early- to middle-career scientist who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet.”

The Greg Leptoukh Lecture honors the life and work of Earth scientist, Greg Leptoukh. Leptoukh was very active in the informatics community and involved in many projects related to data quality and data provenance. All details are here.

Union Fellows – The Earth and Space Science Informatics Focus Group celebrated our first Union Fellow in 2015, when Peter Fox was named an AGU Fellow. Established in 1962, the Fellows program recognizes AGU members who have made exceptional contributions to Earth and space sciences as valued by their peers and vetted by a committee of Fellows. The Fellows program serves to meet the need for identified authorities who could advise, upon request, the various government agencies and other organizations outside the Earth and space sciences. In addition, the program aims to motivate members to achieve excellence in research, thereby enhancing the prestige of AGU. Details on nominating a Union Fellows are here.
