Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) members and staff are leading and participating in a number of high-level sessions and activities during the world’s largest meeting of Earth and space scientists, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting. These events are highlighted below; follow the links for more information.
Town Hall: A Conversation with DJ Patil, Chief Data Scientist of the United States
Monday, December 14, 6:15-7:15 p.m.
104 Moscone South
AGU, with support from ESIP, is hosting the Fall Meeting’s first Data Fair, which features a Town Hall with DJ Patil, the U.S. Chief Data Scientist and Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Data Policy. Patil is credited with originating and popularizing the term “data scientist” and has held leadership positions at LinkedIn, eBay, Skype, PayPal and other technology ventures. His new role includes helping guide the U.S. and Office of Science and Technology Policy in data policy and investments in data and related technology. He will discuss these initiatives and answer questions about Earth and space science data and technology at this special Town Hall.
Leptoukh Lecture
Tuesday, December 15, 2:40-3:40 p.m.
3014 Moscone West
The Greg Leptoukh Lecture honors the life and work of Earth scientist, Greg Leptoukh. Leptoukh was very active in the informatics community and ESIP, and involved in many projects related to data quality and data provenance. ESIP community member Dawn Wright (Esri) was chosen to give the 2015 Leptoukh Lecture in honor of her contributions to Earth and space science informatics.
IN24A Toward a Career in Data Science: Pathways and Perspectives
Tuesday, December 15, 4:00-6:00 p.m.
2020 Moscone West
How can the data community more forward to become more strategic and inclusive in its direction and approaches to promoting careers in data science? In this session, numerous ESIP community members and staff will discuss their academic and career paths, and share lessons learned from these and their experiences in the data science community.
Ignite: Enlighten us, but make it quick!
Wednesday, December 16, 2015, 6:00-8:30 p.m.
Infusion Lounge, 124 Ellis St, San Francisco
#IgniteAGU
For the fourth year, ESIP is hosting the popular science storytelling event Ignite at the AGU Fall Meeting. Ignite enables scientists to showcase their professional and personal interests through presentations lasting five minutes and consisting of 20 auto-advancing slides. The event features free appetizers, access to a cash bar and prizes. No cover charge. Sponsored by NASA’s Applied Sciences Program and held in partnership with ESIP and AGU’s Earth and Space Science Informatics Section.
AGU Honors Ceremony
Wednesday, December 16, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Moscone North, Rooms 134-135
In 2015, ESIP President Peter Fox was named an AGU Fellow; he will be recognized at the AGU Honors Ceremony at the Fall Meeting. To be elected a Fellow is a tribute to AGU members who have made exceptional contributions to Earth and space sciences as valued by their peers and vetted by AGU section and focus group committees. Fox was selected as a Fellow for his “fundamental contributions and impact in science knowledge representation and establishing the Earth and space science informatics discipline.”
Panel: Making Data Matter for the Geosciences
Thursday, December 16, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Moscone North Exhibit Hall D
Erin Robinson, Executive Director of ESIP, moderates a panel featuring four panelists from across the data life cycle: Cyndy Chandler (BCO-DMO), Peter Fox (Tetherless World Constellation, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), Ted Habermann (The HDF Group) and Jeff de La Beaujardiere (NOAA). The panel will focus on how to make data matter across the data lifecycle and the ways in which data repositories can support this.
IN52A-052 Independent Technology Assessment Within the ESIP Testbed
Friday, December 18, 10:33-10:48
2020 Moscone West
The ESIP Testbed is a framework for moving ideas and projects, such as software, data and processes through a development life cycle. This facilitates collaboration across all sectors of ESIP and serves as a collaborative forum for the development of technology standards, services, protocols and best practices. ESIP has partnered with the NASA Advanced Information Systems Technology (AIST) program to integrate independent assessment of Testing Readiness Level (TRL), a type of measurement system used to assess the maturity level of a particular technology, into the ESIP Testbed. This presentation by ESIP Community Director Annie Burgess will discuss this process and outline the versatility of the Testbed.
