Summer Meeting Event News
This year’s Summer Meeting will bring together science, data and information technology practitioners from July 19 to 22 in Durham, North Carolina to talk about the many facets of Earth science big data.
We’re excited to announce that for this meeting we’re introducing a new, interactive meeting agenda and hope you’ll be excited about it too. A draft schedule for the Summer Meeting is now available; please try it out and let us know what you think. As part of this initiative, there’s also a new meeting app; click here to bookmark it on your phone. Visit this page for more information about how to interact with the new schedule.
Learn from Your Colleagues
In addition to the scheduling interface and app, the Summer Meeting features a few new events. On Wednesday, July 20 from 11:00-12:30 p.m., we’ll devote part of the plenary session to a series of short how-to talks by community members that show how they use, manage or visualize Earth sciences data. These will be in the form of five-minute talks with 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds and nine-minute TED-style talks where the presenter remains in control of their slides.
See Research as Art
Another new event is Research as Art, an exhibition of visual media that shows how the ESIP community uses data. Entries will show the diversity of research done by members of our community, as well as their creativity and the impact of their work, in an engaging and accessible way. The call for Research as Art entries is now open. Read more about the kinds of entries we’re looking for and submit yours by June 5. This event is on Wednesday, July 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. and it replaces the traditional Wednesday evening poster session.
Make Music
We’ll bring back the summer jam session on the evening of Tuesday, July 19 at The Blue Note, time TBD. So bring your favorite instrument and prepare to make music with your colleagues, or just show up and enjoy the jams.
Fund a New Project
ESIP’s annual small grant competition, FUNding Friday, is scheduled for July 22 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. During this event, members and students are invited to pitch a project to meeting attendees via a poster and brief talk. Several grants of $5,000 will be awarded to ESIP members and grants of $3,000 will be given to students. Awardees are expected to present the results of their project at a future meeting. See the list of previously funded projects here and start brainstorming yours today.
If you’d like to participate in FUNding Friday, join us on Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Full Steam Brewery and Tavern for FullSTEAM, a collaborative, creative poster-making session where you can prepare your FUNding Friday poster. This event is also for those looking to brainstorm a FUNding Friday project and for people who wish to find project collaborators, but anyone is welcome to attend.
