Community Fellows 2024 Applications are Open

Help us spread the word! The applications for the next cohort of ESIP Community Fellows are open: esipfed.org/community-fellows-app-2023

ESIP Community Fellows are graduate students interested in bridging the gap between informatics and Earth science. This fellowship provides early career researchers a chance to work closely with professionals in an interdisciplinary, cross-sector group by supporting one of the ESIP Collaboration Areas and helping at the ESIP Meetings.

The Semantics Harmonization Cluster made a survey to find out what kind of semantics-flavoured training/capacity development they can offer the ESIP community. Help them plan by completing this Semantics Training Prioritization form.

Physical Samples Cluster: DataCite Presentation

The next meeting of the ESIP Physical Samples Cluster is August 22 at 5 pm EDT and features a presentation by Dr. Rorie Edmonds: “DataCite Samples, Related Identifiers and Metrics.”

In this webinar, representatives from NASA's Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) will discuss recent experiences migrating code and workflows for generating oceanography datasets to the cloud. Learn more and join the webinar on Aug 23 at 2 p.m. US Eastern Time.

Project Phoenix

Project Phoenix is a new community science project to study how wildfire smoke impacts birds in California. Open to birders of all levels of experience, volunteers help monitor birds by conducting weekly, ten-minute surveys of birds at a location of their choosing, beginning now through the end of October. Project Phoenix is a joint partnership between the UCLA La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Rising Star Award – Gateways 2023 (Sept 1)

Know a colleague or student going above and beyond or taking the initiative to learn a new skill for a project? Recognize them through the Rising Star of the Year! Selected Rising Stars of the Year individuals will receive an honorarium of $500 and a certificate. Awardees will also be recognized at the Gateways 2023 conference Oct 30-Nov 1. Nominate a Rising Star by September 1.
 

Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA) Program (Sept 15)

The AGU Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA) Program is a great way to foster the development of new informatics professionals in the earth sciences! To make OSPA a success for the AGU Informatics Section, we need two people to serve as coordinators for our Section's OSPA. The time commitment is minimal (~1-2 hours per week November through mid-January). Reach out to Madison Langseth by Sept 15.
 

Applications for the Philip Lee Phillips Society Fellowships (Sept 15)

Conduct research at the Library of Congress in the largest and most comprehensive cartographic collection in the world. The eight-week residency includes an $11,500 stipend with the possibility of an additional $2,000 honorarium for a lecture and publication. Apply by September 15.
 

2024 NCEAS Environmental Data Science Summit Application

The second Environmental Data Science (EDS) Summit takes place in Santa Barbara on Feb 6-7, 2024 to discuss communication and translation of environmental data to broad and diverse audiences. Applications to attend the EDS are now open and selected participants (about 100 people) will be notified this fall. There is funding to cover full travel for up to 60 individuals. Learn more through the UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) website.
