New Blog Post: Veteran Skills for Data Science Jobs

In his guest blog, Chad Lanctot shares how two decades in the Coast Guard prepared him for a transition into civilian data science jobs. During the last year, Lanctot served as a 2023 Community Fellow for the Physical Samples Cluster.

We are sharing the blog post this week in honor of Veterans Day. Thank you to Chad and everyone in the ESIP community who has served. The ESIP office will be closed on Friday for the holiday.

IT&I Rants and Raves: Groundwater Data

The Information Technology and Interoperability (IT&I) monthly webinar focuses on new tools and techniques in Earth science data.

On Nov 9, Hanna Ake from the California Water Data Consortium will present on persistent unique well identifiers and the challenges (and opportunities) for California groundwater management.

The event is co-hosted by the ESIP IT&I Committee and the USGS Community for Data Integration (CDI).



Semantic Tech and Harmonization: Tools for Natural Disasters and Humanitarian Aid

Co-hosted by the Semantic Technologies Committee and Semantic Harmonization Cluster, they are bringing in Wenwen Li and Yuanyuan Tian from Arizona State University to present, “KnowWhereGraph for disaster response and humanitarian aid: Providing the right help to the right people at the right time.”

Join Paolo Fraccaro and Daniela Szwarcman for their presentation, “A Framework for Building and Finetuning Geospatial Foundation Models” on Nov 3 at noon U.S. Eastern Time. The Cyber2A webinar series focuses on AI for Arctic applications, hosted by the Permafrost Discovery Gateway.
 

GIS Day 2023: Climate Cartographies (Nov 15)

Celebrate GIS Day 2023: Climate Cartographies with a tour of the Geography & Map Division at the Library of Congress. Tour participants (10 am tour + 2 pm tour) will get an overview of the division and take in a display showcasing how climate has been visualized over time, as well as items related to the history of geographic information systems (GIS).

A virtual program on the topic of “Climate Cartographies” with cartographic specialists will debut on the Library of Congress YouTube channel at 1 pm on November 15.
 

NOAA Open Data Office Hours (Nov 29)

As part of the NOAA Open Data Dissemination (NODD) user engagement series, NODD, NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), and Microsoft Azure are hosting an Office Hours discussion on cloud access to NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites – R Series (GOES-R) data.
