Applying data and tools to preserve ecosystems

Earth Information Exchange (EIE) presented by a partnership between NASA ASP/GIO and ESIP

The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners ("Federation") is a network of researchers and associated groups that collects, interprets and develops applications for satellite-generated Earth observation information. The consortium's work is dedicated to providing the most up-to-date, science-based information to researchers and decision-makers who are working to understand and address the environmental, economic and social challenges facing our planet. One practical mechanism is to develop the Earth Information Exchange (EIE), an initiative within ESIP to facilitate the online exchange of earth science information and technologies through different channels/clusters.

NASA produces considerable quantities of information about the Earth from satellites, computational models, and other sources for use by its extensive science and research community. These data are most useful when made easily accessible to NASA researchers and scientists, to NASA's partner Federal Agencies, and to society as a whole. The Science Mission Directorate Applied Science Programs Geoscience Interoperability Office (GIO) leads the development, promotion and implementation of architectures, geosciences interoperability, access, and information technology standards. These initiatives accelerate and expand the delivery and application of NASA's Earth system science research through integrated systems solutions. In support of these initiatives the GIO has developed the Earth Science Gateway (ESG) portal. The ESG is a standards-based, web-services enabled geospatial portal that allows users to discover and access geospatial data and services. ESG is also a prototype for demonstrating and advancing geoscience interoperability.

George Mason University (GMU) has been a member of the ESIP federation since its inception and worked with other ESIP members to advance and implement various objectives of ESIP. GMU also provides support to NASA for many years and, specifically, NASA GIO for several years on portal technologies, Interoperability, Information Technologies, and relevant tasks.

To leverage the assets within GIO, ESIP, and GMU, a partnership among NASA GIO, ESIP, and GMU has been formed to advance ESG and EIE. NASA GIO will provide Geoscience interoperability expertise and ESG to improve access to NASA data. ESIP will provide requirements and appropriate resources for the development and maintenance of EIE. GMU will provide a computing and networking environment and technical staffs to maintain, develop, and improve ESG and EIE where suitable. Compusult, LLC provides the GeoPortal Software. UAH/ITSC provides NOESIS. Liferay provides portal software.
