Falkenberg Award Description

Established in 2002 and jointly sponsored with the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), the Falkenberg Award is named in honor of Charles S. Falkenberg, whose research focused on enabling practical applications of Earth science through data visualization and information technology. The Falkenberg Award is awarded not more than once annually to an individual “scientist under 45 years of age who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet.”

Trained as a computer scientist, Charles S. Falkenberg “was committed to the clear expression to the public of scientific findings about the environment of the Earth and about the process that achieved those findings.” Falkenberg, his wife Leslie, and their daughters, Zoe and Dana, died in the tragic events of 11 September 2001. In 2002, he was posthumously recognized as the first recipient of this award, which is dedicated to his memory.
