Winter Meeting
The ESIP Winter Meeting will be January 4-6, 2012 at the Renaissance DuPont Circle. Last week the Visioneers picked the theme: "Connections Through Collaboration: Engaging Community throughout the Data Life Cycle." 
 
This will be the first meeting that we will have a review panel for session selection. Submit your ideas using the Google form found on the website. The form is live now and will close, October 21. Priority will be given to groups that are collaborating across cluster areas. 
 
2012 Martha Maiden Award - Call for Nominations
Nominations are invited for the 4th annual Martha Maiden Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to the Earth Science Information Community. Established in 2009, to honor the many contributions made by Martha Maiden to the Earth science data & information community, this annual award provides recognition to a member of the ESIP Federation who has demonstrated long-standing service to the community. The Award is presented at the 2012 Winter ESIP Federation meeting in Washington, DC.

From Steve Young, EPA - DataVisualization Student Challenge

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration/Bureau of Transportation Statistics is sponsoring a data visualization challenge to encourage students to create data visualization tools to help transportation decision makers.

All contestants who are citizens of the United States or permanent residents that are currently enrolled at an accredited public or private university or college, or community, junior or vocational college may enter.  The two best overall submissions will be honored at the 2012 Transportation Research Board’s 91st Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, January 22-26, 2012.

Authorized travel expenses will be paid for one member of the winning submission to attend the conference and present their work. From Bill Teng, NASA - Call for Nominations for ASPRS Outstanding Technical Achievement Award - November 1st

The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) is requesting nominations for the newly created ASPRS Outstanding Technical Achievement Award (OTAA).  The purpose of this Award is to recognize developers of breakthrough technology which causes major advances in the practice of photogrammetry, remote sensing or geographic information systems in the United States.  The Award is made solely to an individual or plurality of individuals jointly.  The Award is not made to companies, agencies, bureaus or associations.  However, their personnel are eligible as individuals to receive the Award.

Nominations must be submitted to the ASPRS OTAA Committee no later than November 1, 2011to be considered for this year’s award.  Self-nominations are allowed.  The achievement must be recent, but need not have occured within the year prior to the award as it is recognized that the significance of critical contributions may not immediately become evident. 

The OTAA Committee, a panel of judges composed of the ASPRS President and the Directors of the ASPRS technical Divisions, will convene to critique each nomination, with the final award winner to be determined by mid December.
